I am looking to rewire my '74 K5 possibly looking into a "painless wiring" kit, but not sure if its worth the cost or not. I am even more interested in an actual wiring schematic. Anyone help me out? Also, I read on here one time that someone had put an ambulance heater in their blazer for some warmth... Anyone know where I might be able to get my hands on one?

Thanks!

I recently finished with a rewire of my 75-K5. I used a kit from http://www.ezwiring.com/ I was happy with the quality of both the wire and the instructions. As near as I can tell they are the same type of wire as the "Painless" kits but a lot less $$$.

Awesome. How many circuits did you use? I'm going to have some accys to run...

I used the 21 circuit kit. I don't have many accessories so I just sealed off and tied the extras up. If I ever need another one I can just route it to where needed.

I also did the Ez-Wiring 21 circuit kit. Check out my build thread (link in sig) in the last few pages with dates around Feb 2009.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm ready to get 'er running but figure since I'm here I better not take any short cuts that will cost me down the road...

just keep with it... i bought the ez wiring 21 kit about a year ago.. and my truck is still apart....

sucks.. i was just thinking about working on it tonight..

im cheating.. my fuse box was toast and have added alot of circuits.. hence why im upgrading..

anyway... what did yall do with the dash part... their wires come with no clips on the end... so did you crimp on your old wires? they have to go into the gauge plug....

i actually removed my headlight harness... and just fixed it... by soldering the wires and shrink tubing them....

tail light wires were fine so I added my electrical fuel pump wire to that harness....

now i have to get my engine bay harness done and then the cab wires...
The cab wires just scares me... I dont know where to start...

2 of my friends used EZ wiring and so far my friends 1 ton willys jeep thing is working great and we are in the process of finishing up wiring by buddys trooper with one, and so far its easy as pie! i wish i could do my truck with this kit...someday

I used the EZ Wiring 21 circuit kit and it turned out great. Haven't had any trouble after redoing it all.

Niether have I. I think with Painless you're paying for the name more than anything. I love how the Ez-Wiring has each wire labeled every few inches.

For any dash plugs, it is a universal kit so its not exactly a bolt in. My dash connectors were all pretty good but I did use spade connectors where I could. I cut the factory plugs with a few inches of factory wire and butt spliced the new wires to them with heat shrink tubes over the top.

build your own....

Kinda stupid question but can't really see the pics (I'm on my phone) do you have to use the old ends on your old wiring harness? I have a lot of electrical issues

I like what you did in the pics... Did you build it all from scratch?

about 95%... the only stock wiring I'm using right now is the wiring for the ECM, EFI stuff..

eventually it'll be 100% when I put the Megasquirt system in down the road.....

I see. Mine being a '74, has no efi, and for now it will stay that way so I think one of these kits will pretty much just replace all my stock wiring...lol.. I've already went over budget (imagine that right?) and she still isn't running... yet... lol... We're getting close, actually have the radiator "fitted" up now...

my main problem was the in cab wiring.. my fuse block had shorts, wires all messed up falling off, etc...

so I actually cleaned up my headlight wiring harness (had wires twisted with no electrical tape, butt connectors with wires hanging out, had wire nuts on some of the wires ) but instead soldered them all and shrink tubed them... then the tail light wires were in great shape so I kept them....
im going to use the ez wiring for the engine compartment wiring..

im even doing more than this kit.. im actually running the wires through the factory harness.... so I can take it apart when im done...

all in all I will be maybe $200-$250 in with the kit, connectors, crimp tool as the painless kit was like $600-$700......

my truck has been off the road and apart for almost a year now.. but last night I cut and ran (from my kitchen table as im not doing this in the truck) the horn wire, temp sensor, oil sender, e-chock, alt exciter, alt power. Tonight I want to do a few more.... little by little.. hopefully this weekend get her fired up...

this kit is very intimidating at first.. they tell you do work on one section at a time.. but since my truck is a 197x.... I cut all the zips..unspooled the wires and removed what I didnt need...

like electric fan wire and a few others that were in there just loosely...

since I added a electric choke, electric fuel pump I have added them into the factory harness... there are unused sections... this is nice as now I will have dedicated lines for them and know where they run from and to... prior I didnt know where all this stuff ran from....

I opted for the all black kit... kinda wished i went with the color coded.. but hell I only paid $155 for the all black kit from ebay!!!! :wink1:

Nice!!! I can get all the crimps, tools, and heat shrink I need for "no cost..." lol... I am wanting to really clean up the wires and add some circuits for my locker (sol) and compressor, winch, trail lights... stuff like that... I think this will get me where I wanna go. Thanks for the replies!!!

update for ya...
here is the engine bay harness from the ez-wiring kit crimped through the factory harness. I still have to do the wiper motor wires. I borrowed one from someone and used his as a template for the wire loom. I think factory loom is 3/4" and I have 1/2" so boy is it tight... but all wires fit!!!!!

my goal is to get the truck running.. didnt get it running like I was planning as I got sick.... but now im ok but no time...
so gonna try and squeeze it in... kids are sleeping and so is the wife.. so im here doing the wires....
