All good, I was just kinda confused.... and I bet, hoods can be a real bear... When I worked collision, my boss would only fix maybe a fist-size dent on hoods, anything else he made em get a new hood...Baddog said:
That shallow, large dent action on hoods can be very difficult for all but the most experienced with all that flat, flexing sheetmetal. I've done plenty for private customers, etc but its always one you just kinda shake your head and wish you made em buy a hood....
Back in the resto shop days, I was on vacay once... The boys where working on a 63 Wildcat.. Well, one of the younger guys took it apon himself to blast the large panels and not just undercarriage and jams with our 1000# unit. Needless to say, when I came back and had to fix that ocean wave nightmare, I wasn't a happy camper... Just had to kinda laugh about the whole thing....
New guns better??
I have been out of the autobody supply buissiness at least 12 years..back when I worked at parts stores that also sold auto paints like Dupont and
R-M,I sold a good many Devilbiss MBC guns,and JGA's too,and the Binks and Sharpe copies of them...then about the same time I changed jobs,they came out with the gravity feed and HVLP guns,about a year before I quit..body shops here were reluctant to buy them,they were "old school",and did not always take kindly to newfangled tools....but I did hear many guys who tried them liked them a lot,and would not go back to the old style guns..
I am no painter,I've only sprayed my van,my plow blades,and other equipment where a fine finish was not a priority...but I was wondering if you guys that do a lot of painting prefer the old spray guns,or do you like the newer guns better?...just in case I decide to buy one someday..

eh, I'm so used to the HVLP's now its no big deal. they certainly don't put out like the JGA's, etc but the savings on material, etc is real nice...
and i hear you on shops having a tough time swapping.. mine was the same.. the first hvlp's really sucked, we hated em and didn't swap for awhile..
but nowadays thats all you can buy... its been law for quite some time now.. the only jga's, etc your gonna find are used stuff....
but when push comes to shove, if i'm doing my own car or whatever and am not concerned about the extra materials, definitely more of a joy laying it out with the oldschool stuff. tho you can achieve the same end result with hvlp, just requires different technique...

Im using harbor freight gravity feed hlvp guns...
not show finishes but for spraying shop equipment the cant be beat...
brass and non corrosive stuff inside... Ive compared them to name brands and they are decent... getting 3 out of 4 stars in my book

most of the cheapies spray reasonable... My boss bought a bunch, but gelcoat leads to a very tough life for guns and they eventually start having probs..
There have been an abundance of lower priced guns coming out in recent years.. some better than others... I have a bud who has one, went to wash it down with thinner and the fan knob melted..
