ok im getting ready to paint my truck in the next 2 weeks and im rolling on RUSTOLEUM safety red and i was curious how much thinner to use some say 10% and ive heard 25% so i just need a 5% range thanks

I know a few people that have done roll on jobs . There's really no specific ratio for thinning the paint. Basically what you're looking for is a consistency somewhere between melted ice cream and vitamin D milk, which is roughly in the neighborhood of 40 to 50 percent thinning. Shoot for a paint that's thin enough to flow, but not so thin that it all falls off the car.

Use Mineral spirits to thin it.

ok hey i got all my light and wiring problems fixed and i changed my differential fluid today now im on to brakes but i can def do that myself truck is really coming along all i got left is to do my brakes put on my new bumper and fix my gas guage then it will be 100% and obviously painting it too

Use Mineral spirits to thin it.

The label states to thin with acetone only. Clean up with mineral spirits.

The label also states to thin no more than 8 to 1 (8 parts paint to 1 part acetone).

Read up on those links posted before and specifically on "rolling and tipping" techniques for best results. You want a foam roller not one of those hairy ones you use for house paint.

I sprayed mine on with a Wagner sprayer. The paint gave good coverage for going over multiple shades of darker and lighter base paint. Only needed 2 coats but I leaned to the thicker side of the thinning.

If you're expecting this paint to be tough as nails..... it is not. I've already nicked it a few times with very little effort. But I knew that going in. And after all that, would I do it again? Probably not.

is it true that tremclad and rustoleum are like same thing just different name?

Thats what I heard. Also heard use the proffesional version over the other. They said it dries and cures faster and is supposedly harder and less chip prone from what I read

I used the rusto prof stuff. If it is less prone to chips I would hate to see what the reg stuff is like. Probably flies off the panel with a strong wind.

It's not good, I can tell you that much:doah: Mine will be getting redone with automotive paint once we get back from Germany...

Everbody I know that has done this has thinnes with mineral spirits, and has thinned it 40-50% . There are countless other online resources that say the same. As well as the famous one from hot rod magazine.

It has to be 100% mineral spirits as well. Ive seen it on a thread about it and the guy got a bottle that said PAINT THINNER 100% mineral Spirits

Like I said, Just going by what it says on the instruction label of the product.

496 So you really don`t think the paint will hold up?

I`m still considering painting mine with tremclad but if you don`t like it I`m not sure.:dunno:

Do you got any more pics of it?

It is a soft paint. Soft enough to get nicked by my kids plastic booster seat when I bounced it off the quarter panel edge of the door opening. I think that if I dent any more panels most of the paint will stay on though as it seems really flexible. I kept bending up the overspray paper after the paint dried and the stuff just bent instead of cracking and falling off.

The end result isn't bad. It looks good from...... uh..... 20 or so feet away. I haven't taken any new pics outside in the open yet, just the ones in the garage. And I have since painted the roof of the cab too.

I'm not gonna sit here and say 'don't do it'. Because I did. But I knew the pros and cons going in. I will say, if at all possible, heed Ryokens advice. If there is any way you can do a paint job with proper catalyzed paint, then do it.
