So I just dropped some parts off to get powder coated. I'm getting them done all black, but I'd actually like to stick with the color scheme I set for the truck. It's just so much cheaper to get the powder coating in black. I've done some googling and some sources say scuff with 120 grit then paint directly over. Some mention using a primer, some just say paint. Has anyone done this? Is it even worth the trouble?

Just want the color. I know, kinda dumb and OCD. In order to order the color in powder coat it had to be a 25 lb minimum and I don't have that much to powder coat.

it will accept paint fine if all shine is removed, and avoided breaking thru anywhere... 120 is a bit burly, I'd be more in the 180 to 220 range... than maybe a maroon scuffpad to ensure no shine... a pisscoat of good self-etching primer on first wouldn't hurt.. but you could go right to paint, just make sure you put on enough to bury the sand scratches...

Powder makes a great primer to paint to assuming they properly prep the metal to make the powder stick. 120 might be a little course unless you wanted to spray sealer on it before paint, 240 or 320 should work well.

Parts are getting sandblasted too. So hopefully the powder coat will get good adhesion.

Thanks for all the input. I'll see what it all looks like when I get it back. Maybe it'll look good enough that I just decide to go with it and not paint at all.

Damn! Powder coat got done fast!

Looks real good. I think I am gonna try to paint the crossmember just because it's pretty visible under the truck. Don't think anyone will really be looking at motor mounts and spring plates.

Looks real good.

Yes, it does and it's already the correct color, so why create more work to peel and look worse later? So, what color do you want?

The powdercoat places tell me to touch up any damage with rustoleum.

Just living and learning my man. Might screw up and look like sh*t. Might not. The crossmember is at least an easy piece to remove and get fixed if it screws up.

More work? I just did it in 20 min. Used a "fine" sanding mat that felt pretty close to 220 grit. I just went slow, light pressure. The mat let me really control the pressure placement. There's a post sanding pic and post paint pic below.
