over the last years i have painted my jimmy with tremclad ( exterior paint for metal) must of painted it a least 4 times, i used the jimmy for hunting and scrached the paint up figured it was cheaper 30$ a gallon. now the question if i want to repaint to a real automotive paint can i get by with a sealer or do i have too strip too metal? this tremclad is hard too sand its stays soft which means a lot off sanding and sand paper.

I'd probably chem strip most, sand the rest..

catalyzed car paints can only have so many mils under them before they become problematic.. 4 paints of that, I'm betting it's thick already... regular paint, 3 paint jobs is risky.. 2 is fine...

not to mention the "soft" factor...

u have to sand it down!! sorry buddy!!! been there done that!!! tremclad are a bi*ch to sand!!! what i found that work well is a da sander whit 3m 320 grit paper. if u got any more question just buzz me!!! will be glad to help !! used to be a bodyman a long time a go!!!

I rustoleum'd my truck and didn't like it. I think the two are similar (rustoleum and tremclad). I used chemical sripper the da'd what was left. Don't put automotive paint over it, IT WON'T STICK. Ask me how I know.

what chemical stripper is best, is it something you brush on and scrap off,i remember doin,t something like this on wood and it removed only one coat at a time.whats a da sander? wouldn,t corser sand paper go faster like 80 grite
