a hose-fed gun is a pressure pot system.. generally a 2 qrt hanging from the belt, or like i have, a 3 gallon floor style.. plus's and minus's with a pressure system.. nice for heavy single stage apps, primer too.. don't wanna be spraying basecoat thru one...
a simple gravity feed is usually the best beginner gun... usually a decent gun will run $50 to $200...
be aware that overly cheap guns have plastic parts that melt... but a $25 Horrible Freight might last ya awhile... but no rebuild parts.. major manufacturers like Devilbiss, Binks, Sata, Sharpe, etc all have beginner lines, and good support...
oh, and all guns produced in the last 20 yrs or so are HVLP.... i actually own 3 pre HVLP guns still... 6 HVLP.. a Bink's #7, Devilbass MBC and JGA... wastes some material, but spray sweet!
