i plan on cleaning up my 10b and 14b sometime soon and i was wondering a few things.

1. what is needed in the general prep of things? do i need to take the axle completely apart???

2. what have ya'll used to get the rust off?? i'm planning on using a sandblaster, then some lube and a wire brush.

3. what should i use to coat it with? i have some rust bullet that i never used and was wondering if that would make a great base, then maybe some black paint, but which do ya'll recommend??

4. last but not least, has anybody put bedliner on their axles???
i have some herculiner that hasn't been used.

I used POR-15 on mine and I couldn't be happier. You only need to degrease them, and don't have to worry about the rust since POR-15 loves rust. POR-15 is unbelievably strong and durable. Mine has lasted quite well. http://www.por15.com/

rust bullet, simple, jsut scrape em and brake clean them, we tried por 15 on my dads k30 frame and the stuff peeled off, aparently you have to do like 15 prep steps before the actual or 15 is applied. a few of my buddies did rust bullet on their floors and love it. you can tell it seeps into the metal, im doin everything rust bullet, axles/frame everything and a top coat of rust olum black... for cleaning just scrape them and wire wheel, ofcourse if you have easy connections with a sandblaster do it

I just preped some a few months ago. I used an angle grider with a wire wheel brush attachment, as well as different drill bit wire brushes.. it took a bit to clean them all up but they looked good. I also power washed the grease off. I then changed pinion seal (good precautionary practice). Then I painted with DupiColor Engine Enamal from Advanced Auto Parts. My axles look reat!

I second this! I find the stuff indestructable. When I did my axles I sandblasted, used POR 15 'metal ready'? which I don't think was necessary, and brushed it on.

That said I also use DIY bedliner a lot too. Bumper, mirrors, interior, leading edge of hood, and now hubs. Come to think of it I might have a problem...

Big thing with the bedliner is to keep the texture limited. No point in collecting mud.

thanks for all your replies. considering that i have the rust bullet, i think i will go with that and some rustoleum, but i'm still curious on the bed-liner.

also, approx. how much time did it take all of ya'll? and did ya'll disassemble the axle completely or could you just mask it off (like say the front disk brakes.

i degreased the whole things and then wirewheeled them clean. scuffed them with a scotchbrite pad and ajax. then i cleaned them off and shot a coat of car paint. they look great and i did them in march. just hose it off and theyre shiny again. i really am proud of how they came out so ill whore em out.

Arrrrrggggg! Can't.....Seeee......Blinded by shine of axle tube....

Good thing I can type by feel. ;)

I always just clean off with a wire brush, pressure wash, then use Krylon Primer and Semi-Gloss Black (Rustoleum). Cheap and effective

I like the flatter colors on my rigs, the shiny stuff looks funny to me.....just my opinion. Not bashing poster above, just not my style either.

I am loving the pink outfit and sippy cup contrasted with the flat black and OD green axles!
