How did you prep your axles for paint? Just wire wheel, prime, and paint. If so what kind of primer and paint?:dunno: I just want a semi gloss black.

i just used a wire brush and an angle grinder with a rust remover disk on it then air hosed it off wiped it off with a wet rag. Than i painted it with some black high temp paint.(guess you dont have to use high temp i just had some extra)

Just make sure you use primer. Either etching, zinc, or damn it I cant remember what the brick red kind is but that works awesome too.

I used a primer called ruster ender. You spray it on and it goes on kind of thick and looks creamy. After about 15 minutes it turns the surface black as it neutralizes rust.

I just finished up my replacement front 10b.

I disassembled it and worked on it in pieces but here's what I did...
Putty knife to scrape off all the engine drippings, sludge, dirt, and peeling paint.
Wire brush the loose rust and dirt off. Big ones for the large open areas and toothbrush sized ones for the corners and such.
Degreased with degreaser/soap and water, hose off and let dry or blow dry with compressed air
Brushed on Rustoleum dk red primer from the quart can.
Let it dry at least a day.
Brushed on Rustolueum semi gloss black from the quart can.

Looks good and so far pretty durable, but I used cheap brushes and I thought I picked out all the brush hairs as I went. But I still find them now stuck in the paint. So, if you go this route, use better brushes.

Axle with new paint

I am in the process of rebuilding my front 10b. I tried several differnt paints that were available from local auto parts stores. I ended up using Rustoleum Selk Etching Primer, then a base coat of Rustoleum Satin Black Engine Enamel (resists oil and gas), then I sprayed on a light coat of Rustoleum Spray on Bedliner. So far it seems to be working, but then again it's still in my shop being worked on.
