Painting diff cover?

Just got my Jethro-built 14BFF cover ... poor Fedex guy was stooping to carry the box up ... damn, this thing is 100% USDA grade-A BEEF

Anyway, gonna go drain the old girl and test-fit the new one, but when it comes time to put it on, I figger I should primer it and paint it, yes? Untreated steel is gonna get rusty and nasty-looking

Should I leave the gasket surface unpainted, so as to get best sealing?

Then the other question is what color -- I'm leaning towards the middle blue of my three-color blue camo (hugger orange just doesn't go with the camo!) ... but I'm debating trying to work a bowtie onto it somewhere

I painted mine blue. I didn't worry about primer. Just take it off and get a grinder witha steel wool wheel and polish is up, then just through that paint on it. I'm sure primer would make it look better, but i'm sure it will get sractched and stuff anyways.

I used rim paint and no primer , left the inside bare . Works for me

camo it,that what I did to mine. No need for primer, they are going to get scatched anyway.

Yeah, but it's a bit small to camo-ify. It stands out from the rest of truck good enough ... seeing as the rest is either camo, or dark rusty/greasy black goo

And 85mudblazin, you know it ... had to go get another gallon of gear oil, grumble grumble... but that thing won't get hot or go bad, ever

Quick question that is somewhat related I guess. (looks nice BTW)

Does gear oil "froth" like engine oil and cause the same problems? It seems that with that much oil in there it would really beat the oil up. I guess it's not really being pumped or anything like an engine, is that the only proble, with overfilling an engine? (loss of pressure because the pump can't push the froth) I know I've heard of people filling up their diffs on a hill to get more fluid in them, but I never really considered the parallel or lack thereof compared to an engine.

I guess also, if the pinion is raised, the additional fill is necessary anyways.

the reason eng. oil foams up is because of the crankshaft beating up the oil like an egg beater. in a diff I dont think oil level is as critical as long as u put enough in
