hey, does anybody know if the old non-computerized chevys had a P/N switch? my truck is a '74.

i need to locate it or add one in so that i can properly wire in the ECM on my TBI swap.

Up under the dash on the topside of the steering column, mine had a purple wire and a yellow wire plugged into it. 89 wiring harness. I just spade connected them, that way I can use it as a valet switch too.

My '74 had one as Boondock describes.
Top of the column at the firewall. Somewhat semi-circular looking.

what year is your rig? are you talking about the wire harness that looks kind of like this:

what do you mean by valet switch?

The harness was out of an 89 Burb that I made into a more functional, use-able harness.( eliminating the AC, the power windows, ect.) I didn't change the N/S switch stuff though. I just didn't use a N/S switch because it was going to be for a Manual trans.
If you don't make the connection of the two wires, the connection between the ignition switch and the starter cannot be made. hence valet switch! If I wanted to make it not start-able, I just pull the spade connectors apart, to start it just reconnect the spade connectors and start like normal.

cool. i found the switch you're talking about. it has a purple wire going in from the ignition switch and then to the starter. that must be the neutral safety switch.

on the same switch there is also a plug with a green wire and a light green wire. do you guys have any idea what that circuit might be for?

the reason i ask is because isn't there a difference between a Neutral Safety switch, and a Park/Neutral switch?

Both the same will only let the vehicle start in park or neutral

The green wires are probably for the reverse lights.
Yes it is. The lighter green is the wire that goes to the lights.
On my early harnesses I have, the wire that comes out of the ignition switch to the N/P safety switch is purple with a white strip. It seems GM turned this wire to a yellow wire during the mid to late seventies. Probably to save money.
The wire after the N/P safety switch going to the starter is plain purple for all years.
