Ok, this is a long shot but i'm going to ask anyways.

Does anyone know where to buy parts (specifically the quill return spring) for an old Delta drill press? The part number is 402-04-320-5002 (Delta calls it a pinion spring assembly) and the search i've done says that part is discontinued. The spring in my drill press broke about 2" down from the bend that holds it into the cap. I've thought about trying to put a bend back in it but not sure if i should try to heat the spring lightly first or if it is too brittle to even attempt that.

Well, turns out i was able to put a new bend in the spring and salvage it (after heating it with my butane torch). Sure glad since i can't find a replacement anywhere.

if you can PM me some dmensions i can see if i can order you one from my work

A little too late for that now. I repaired the spring and put the thing back together. I tried to measure the spring though and it is over 36" long, probably closer to 48". You do know what style of spring this is don't you?

This spring is the flat coiled type with a 90* bend on the inside which slips in the center of the shaft and then a 180* bend on the outer end to grab a slot in the cap that the spring sits in.

If you are able to get this type of spring then i would be willing to pull it back apart and try to get an exact measurement as who knows how long this spring will last (it broke once so i'm sure it will break again).

If there's a will there's a way, you had the will and found the way. Good on you! :waytogo:

we have a vendor that just sells springs so i might be able to get it. but of you already have it back together then i wouldnt want you to go through the hassle

no hassel as it only takes a few mintues to get it apart. I'll see what i can do in the next couple days as i'm busy with a couple jobs at the moment trying to make some cash.
