Say what? My half-ton diesel suburban came with 3.73:1 axles... :dunno:
I stand corrected.
Maybe it's a regional thing.
I have seen my fair share of diesels and parted quite a few and the only ones I have seen were 3/4 ton.

Any gear ratio was available with any motor combo. Certain people back in the day thought you got better fuel economy with hight ratios and a lot were ordered that way.
