Anyone here had good luck with buying a junker k5 on craiglists... using the parts you need and then parting out/ selling the rest? I see these rigs go for $300-$800. Not sure I want to deal with the hassle of parting out a rig.

I've been watching craiglist lately and there's some good stuff going over there. Just today I saw another complete '88 K5 parts truck posted. I'd totally jump on parts rigs to collect parts/resell the rest, especially clean WA vehicles...just don't have a trailer or place to store much stuff.

There's always way better deals on the westside...slim pickens over here in eastern WA.

I've had decent luck.

Have to know what people will buy, and won't.

I would try craigslist, and local forums.

It depends on what you take off of the vehicle, and what you plan to sell. I part out several vehicles a year (usually over 40). If you plan on taking the axles, tans/t-case, motor and selling the rest....not a good chance you will make much (if any) profit. But if you only take a few trim pieces and maybe a seat, there would be a lot left to sell.

Another thing to consider is the time it takes. The quickest I've ever moved a vehicle through my yard was 16 days, but that was pure luck. Most of the time it's usally 3 months before I cut up whats left and head to the scrap yard. It also helps to have a decent size area to have the car/truck parked in. I wouldn't want to be doing it in a one car garage.

90% of the time I make money on what I part out. I hear of someone needing cash or wanting to get something out of their yard and come home with another vehicle (I'm not picky about what I buy/sell). 5% of the time I break even and the other 5% I loose money (and time). I don't do it for the money though, actually I don't know exactly why I do it....but I know the money isn't the main reason.

I bought a completely stripped pickup for $200. All that was left was the axles (10b's), 700r4, 208, and the body/frame. Everything else was completely picked off. Now yes thats not exactly nothing but considering I took the rear springs, and scrapped everything but the trans/tcase I made back $100 in scrap. If I could sell this damn trans I could break even plus have the wheels and springs I needed for free.

this is what I was going to say in a nutshell Only difference is, i do 73-87(or91) chevys only. gotta have the time/patience/space to put some of the worst eyesores on the planet.

isn't that how everyone builds their trucks?? i buy whole trucks and keep what i need and sell the useless to me stuff, and supply my friends with really cheap parts then take the rest to the scrap yard. i have enough room to store them until i get tired of looking at it. if i break even i'm happy, most of the time i still have parts left over that were free to me.

I parted out my '89 and it was a pain in the butt and took up half my garage for six months. Given the parts I sold and the parts I put in my '91 I prolly broke even, but I paid too much for the '89 in the first place. Some people are very cool to deal with, but you'll get a bunch of people who are looking for parts for their '95 pickup and don't realize they are different or who say they want to buy something or will drop by to take a look and you'll never hear from them again. I'm in a smallish town so there aren't many local buyers, so shipping stuff can be a pain - especially when you pack it up and drive to the post office only to clear $5. I still have a bunch of junk that I am just too stubborn to scrap.
