I just traded my 700r4 for a 4L80e that I am going to convert to 4wd. I understand that I'm going to have to do something with the output shaft and I have read that there is also a sort of freeze plug that needs to be changed in the rear of the tranny. Does anybody know what I have to do on the output shaft or the part number of the new plug that I need? Also tell me if I am forgetting anything else that needs to be changed besides the VSS sensor as well. Thanks Y'all!

transfer case from old 700r4 will be 27 spline input .

4l80-e will be 32 spline output.

4l80-e will be full electronic controlled only trans . unless full man control conversion kit is used .

look up www.usshift.com for super nice stand alone controller kit .

gm part#9427692 and less than 5 bucks for the plug .

tail shaft swap out = full trans tear down and shaft swap . as shaft is first in case / last out . so for this at min full gasket / seal kit and someone who knows how to do the job .

vss sensor will be in rear position on tranny for 2wd use . if you want true 4wd setup you need a tail shaft sensor on the transfer case output . and 208 never had this . only 241 case starting in 90-up. and 90-91 only for our body style pass side drop front .

You bastidd!

The one time I had 100 percent usable info in my head from my 07 mud truck days and you took the rug right out from under me! :flipoff:

I will be putting a 6L lq4 in so wiring is not a problem. Also, will the NP208 work without the VSS in it? I'd like to keep it if possible and I don't go into 4wd much yet haha. I am new to all this so all the help possible would be appreciated.

A 241 swaps right on them, and has a VSS factory. Its basically a big brother to the 208. That would be your ticket.

Make sure the 241 has the 400/4L80E input spline or be prepared to change the input gear ( total disassembly) You will also need the adapter from 4L80E to the transfer case.

Not sure if you know this yet but the 2wd 4l80e's already have both speed sensors in the case (input and output) so you don't need to worry about finding a VSS equipped transfer case. Once you get the tail shafts swapped out just about any t-case with a 32 spline input will work and if you run one with a mechanical speedo you can re-use your existing gauge cluster instead of changing over to an aftermarket one or one from a 90-91 Suburban/Blazer.

I've been searching all over the Internet to see if this was possible. I just picked up a 2wd 4l80e and really didn't want to bother with having to go with electric speedo and gauges. Makes life a little simpler

You're completely right. The conversion is not too bad either. I put a transgo shift kit in it as well. If you're taking your time like me it shouldn't take more than a couple days at the most.
