Happened today, couldn't help but smile all the way home:
"I've got a tire that's losing air, I think it's the valve, can I get some valve cores?"
Reply: "What car?... What engine size?"

Hey man, don't post that kind of stuff. It scares me!!!!!!! I finally found a guy at my local Autozone and I talk to no one but him. I'll wait til the next day if he's off. I'll wait an hour in line to talk to him. Some of these people that get hired are frightening!

That jeep thing? Yah I understand it....... Like my Blazer? <a target="_blank" href=http://community.webshots.com/user/blazerk5>http://community.webshots.com/user/blazerk5</a>

Wait till your on the other side of the counter and the customer says all small block chevys are the same! I do this for a living and I have seen what you are talking about. Find a good parts person and you will be set for life.

I also sell parts for a living. Try not to lump everyone into the category of stupid parts guys. We are not all like that. I do agree, however, that there are a ton of people in the industry just like that. Hell, i work with some of them. Also, I always get the classic request for 350 valve cover gaskets. I say "what year is your 350". Of course I get the "Hell, it doesn't matter, it's just a damn 350". I say okay and grab them a set of the centerbolt type gaskets, and they inherently always want the old style. I then explain that there is more than one type of valve cover used on the sbc. I know this is getting a little long, but I just don't want anyone to get the impression that all parts men are idiots. Glad I got that out.

I give the guys my hubby works with a hard time. I had to get a tail light for my blazer.
"I need a tail light for a '79 blazer, 383, 350 tranny, blue and white....blue interior......broken passanger door lock...." LOL!

Im glad to se e that there are a few other parts guys here, i was hoping that I wouldnt be the only defender of the counter people!! I will admit, i have dealt with some real morons, hell i work with some of them. BUT in our defense, when you stand behind the parts counter all day long, your brain tends to get a little fried between every combo of year/make/model/displacement/engine-type/brake configuration/belt configuration/exhaust layout/wheel size/2 or 4 wd/body style/ 1/2-3/4 or 1 ton/power or non-power windows/ and finally, which bulb did you want? --that we deal with ALL DAY LONG!! whe n i deal with an 85 chevy w 305 and an 87 chevy w/ a 350 inside of 5 minutes of each other, they tend to become the same thing inside my noggin. (esp since i drive an 86...) Just be patient with us. &lt;img src="http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif"&gt;
on another note, it is really funny to call pep boys from my work and ask them for a lower radiator hose for my corvair, or a thermostat for a beetle, or plugs for my diesel, etc.......and see what they say......&lt;img src="http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/wink.gif"&gt;

I've met some VERY KNOWLEDGABLE and VERY HELPFUL guys in parts stores around here, no doubt about it. BTW, that's how I got my valve cores after all

. It was just this fresh kid on Sunday, probably hadn't worked there for very long, trying to do right, trying to be helpful, wrestling with the computer catalog and inventory, and getting further away from the target by the minute....certainly wasn't for lack of effort, and I appreciate that.

Ok lets's just see how good of a parts guy you all really are!
I'm looking for aftermarket 89-91 power option mirrors for my k5 do ya know where I could find some? Gm wants wayyyyy to much!

I've learned that you never ask anyone at Autozone to find a belt by length - they will just look at you funny. I popped the P/S belt on a dump truck I was driving, and stopped in the 'zone to grab one (only parts place open at 6:30 PM) - I took the guy the old one, and he told me you can't measure them (I could see the belt measuring deal hanging on the wall behind him), so I told him - I need a power steering belt for a 1979 Ford C-750, Caterpillar 3208, Allison auto. He looked at me kind of funny, then got out the book and the measurement tool

. Autozone motto - "If it can't be looked up on the computer - you don't need it"

I've had my hassles w/ parts guys... but you get to know who is good and knows your kind of vehicles. Also this is a big reason I'll drive a little farther and/or pay a tiny bit more for parts from a 4x4 or race shop. Easier finding the right parts and less frustration easily pays for the extra buck or two.

I am in parts also....don't be so hard on us.I agree there is some totally useless counter guys,esp up here at Canadian Tire in Canada.These guys rely on the computer to give them the info,they have no knowledge at all.I sell to shawnboy all the time,ask him about my sales knowledge.Sorry just venting and sticking up for us sales guys who do know what we are talking about.

chevrules...always has and always will

I will have to say I have run into both types.
I'm not going to take sides but nothing beats a counter guy who has had grease under the nails before.

A good parts guy is like a good woman, once you find one you won't want to look for another.

I NEVER go to Autozone unless I absolutely have to. None of the employees speak english at the one near my house, and they couldn't find there a$$ with both hands. I'm not a master mechanic by any means, but these people know less then me. I only go to Checker and Napa these days, because every time I go to AutoZone I get so pissed off that I think my head is going to explode.
