My 78 K5 Federal Emissions just barely passes WA emissions. It came with no cat and federal - heavy duty emissions. If I move to CA what is the likely hood of me being able to bring the K5 with me and get it registered in CA? Would I even need a CA emissions test?

You may need a CAT because I've never heard of a K5 tested under federal emissions. My cousin's 1985 k20 is heavy enough for federal emission. BUT he always has to fight with the smog guy till he understands it NEVER came with a CAT as an 8600lb gvw truck.

It has to have all the stuff it originally came with. My K5 needs a smog pump, egr, 3way CAT, and all the other stuff connected to the engine.

Do you have the sticker on the radiator core support? It will give all the vacuum lines and emissions equipment listed.

Stickers are long gone. I know it did not come with a smog pump and cat per the first owner.

My 78 came from Nevada with Federal emissions. I had to put single exhaust and a cat on it along with all the other stuff to smog it. That was in 89 and the only smog test I ever did on it. I live in one of the rule counties where smog test are only required when your putting a vehicle in your name or bringing in from out of state. I'm not gonna say what I have done to it in the last 22 years. :D

You're going to need the sticker for your year/make/model/state. It is required for the smog guy to look at. Has to be legit from a smog ref too IIRC

the label is not actually a requirement. They have emission control lookup books just for this reason as the labels become unreadable over the years. If you have federal emission vehicle the tailpipe emission must not exceed the FTP (federal test procedure) for a federal vehicle even if you are in ca. As long as all required emission control systems are intact and in working order you are good to go as far as visual . If your truck never had cats then you do not need them. You may or may not need to get into it with your smog guy, i would mention that it was a federal vehicle so that it doesn't get entered in as a cal vehicle.

my 85 federal emissions blazer has a pump and a cat on it.:eek1: there are no heavy duty emissions on a blazer.:doah:

emissions in cali is required on all vehicles post 1975.it will need all smog equipment on and intact to register the truck.i believe there is a off highway exemption, but then it would have to be trailered to where you 4x it.

As long as it passes the sniffer test then it'll be ok. When they punch it into their computer as Federal (assuming that it truely is) you will only be required to have what the federal vehicle came with. I had a 76 blazer that was federal and it did not have a CAT either and it wasn't a problem.

I have a friend with a fereral title and he doesn't have to smog his truck. But I agree with finding a pre 75 or diesel "Cab" and swaping it out. I bought mike for 300 bucks in bakersfield on a non opp. Best investment yet.

My service manager has a 76 C10 that he said he doesnt have to smog either because its a Federal truck. :dunno:. Although, I reccommend not coming into this ****hole of a state. You get a roadblock everytime you try to do anything.

If its a 76 he has to smog it, federal or not.

His truck is an 81, i know he doesnt smog it. And it came with a 305. ill ask him tonight why his is smog exempt.

So I'm not sure. Will I need to smog it or just have it tested. Of tested it will fail. It just barely passes the WA emissions with out the smog stuff.

He could live in a county that is exempt from emissions testing still (there are still a bunch in California believe it or not) but otherwise if it's 1976 or newer it DOES need to be tested every other year.
