First off this isn't for me or even a 73-87(91) GM...it's for a buddy and his '89 Toyota station wagon.

He was given the car and it runs great and even looks good...but has clearcoat peeling up bad on the roof. Aside from a whole new paintjob what's the low buck (or semi-low buck) fix for this.

I was thinking a buffing wheel and some of that mildly abrasive polish the professional detailers use to get scratches, etc out of the clearcoat. Use that to get rid of the peeling up stuff and then wax the hell out of the rest of it...?

Then again I don't know much...I've waxed a vehicle about 3 times in my life. One of my vehicles is entirely coated in CARC paint and the other has Herculiner on the body.

The guy that does & helps me w/ my body work says the only fix is to strip to bare metal & re-paint. My cc's clear is coming off & getting worse every time it rains. I don't think the paint like its new climate.

there is nothing you can do for this...

the minimum is sand the existing clear, either off, so it's all basecoat, or so the clear edges are featheredged good (not recommmended for various reasons)...

then overcoat it with a couple coats of base, and reclear...

Thanks guys, I'll give him the (bad) news.

There's a way but it's pretty hokey and you won't get a perfect blend. It will stop the peeling for a while but not more than 6 months and you have to chase more peeling.

Pick up some Miniwax exterior Spar Urethane and a soft brush. :D

Carefully feather edge the edges of the peeling clearcoat without touching your basecoat - your just trying to limit the sharp edges.

Paint the urethane on the peeled area and just a tad over the remaining clearcoat edges then let dry.

Come back in a week with some Meguire's Scratch Out and a speed control polisher with wool pad.
