Pennsylvania lift inspection

hey im going to be ordering a 6 inch lift kit soon from rough country since i need a stronger spring rate for hauling. now im racking my brain between 4 inch heavy duty or a 6 inch. the reason im racking my brain is cause im worried about inspection laws i got a few of my friends that works at inspection garages but they all tells me different story. emission is covered for my truck.. but im worried about the lift kit.. if its too high i cant get it inspected cause im going to use the truck on weekends on road and off roading too.. and for enjoyment too. so im curious what u pennsylvania guys know about inspection rules for lifted trucks.. how many inches from bumper to ground. etc. thanks for ur help.
 
I think the only "law" PA has is tires that stick out past the body. There is also bumper or frame height, but don't know what the limit is.
 
Bumper height law is 30" max. Doesn't specify front or rear, but either one bing too much will fail technically.

Front blocks fail of course.

Blocks bigger than 5" fail in the rear(though I see a ton of guys with 6"+ blocks running around).

Wheel spacers over 1/4" fail.

Anything more than a 3" body lift fails.

Tires cannot stick out beyond the edge of the body.


Those are direct out of the inspection manual. Anyone who says different, takes their license into their hands.
 
Eh, in the 4 yrs I lived out there, I never saw a cop... :haha:

Only in bigger towns like Easton and Allentown... :wink1:

I do very often. Guess things have changed. Or maybe its just being in my area.
 
so will i be ok? with a 6 inch lift, 35 to 38 inch tire and heavy duty bumper? thats no more than 30 inches to the ground? im not usin body lift, or blocks.
 
I bet you will be very very very very close, if not over.

I had a K5 with 4" lift and 39.5" tires. I forget the measurement, but I think I was at like 32 or 33". Again, just off the top of my head.

Figure .75" lower if you have 38s. And 2" taller with 6" lift. You will be over most likely. However, adding something like a piece of angle iron to the bottom side of your bumpers, and that would technically be legal.

Look next time you see a huge lifted truck. You will likely see some "auxillary" bumpers, or pieces added to the bumpers to make them legal, or at least close enough that cops don't bother them.
 
thanks for ur help sled dog.. im gonna be using a well worn 36s. with 6 inch.. should be alright for now.. and when i go to inspection ill throw on 31s.. hows that.. and ofc home made bumper..

some of these are correct and some are close.

Your bumper height limit is based on your registered GVWR. There is no specific law that says you can not go higher then a 3" body lift but there is a maximum measurement from the frame to the body.

this is a really long read but it is the actual laws. Read it more then once. the bumper height limits are not simple. where and how they measure can vary based on a lot of things.

If you do not read this you are asking for trouble. more then once my knowledge of the law has gotten me out of trouble. cops have an idea of the requirements but its impossible for them to remember everything. memorize what applies to you and use it in your defense fighting the tickets you will eventually get.
 
also on a truck a rear bumper is not required or under law as it is not factory equipment not sure what yr this extends to but covers mine up to '79

must be updated from my inspection manual. that site is from 04, my book from 03. I thought I remembered that GVW breakdown but its not in my manual. I need to get an updated book.
 
quality costs...

people justify inferior products by the cost...

I'm sure the train of "I run RC's and they're ok" parade will come by now... I stand by my statement tho.. The reason people buy em is because they're cheap, plain and simple..

if the truck had a rear bumper as an option then you can run without it. but usually the bumper hangs lower then the frame so I would run one to help with the height limit.
