So wondering guy's since I need to penny pinch this truck right now where is cheapest place to look for US standard gears with bearings etc included?

So my 79 14 bolt full float is 3.73 right now. How do I know if to get thick or not gears? please explain in details for.

if you plan on using your 373 carrier with 4.88 gears you will need a thick gear set. Make sure what ever bearing kits you end up with are either koyo or Timken. I have had good luck watching ebay for ring and pinions. Just did a re gear on the suburban to 5.13 (d60-14b) and spent just under 300.

Too bad you're not closer to the Ms coast, a local guy is selling a 14 bolt with 4.88's and a Detroit for $400.

Yeah, there's always the chance you can get a whole axle or 3rd member cheaper than gears....for a 14-bolt. If you have a Dana 60 up front, that won't be the case. Keep an eye out for good used gears. If you have a front 10-bolt keep in mind that rear gears can work, too. You can also save some coin by disassembling everything first and just ordering the bearings you need, vs. having a complete kit upfront. There is also a big labor cost for gear setup, so learn how to do it yourself, make the right friends or find somebody who can do the work on the side.

What size tire are you going to run? The difference between 4.56 and 4.88 is negligible so finding a CUCV axle (or set) might save you a lot of money.

Alot of people seem to knock used gears and found none local for sale. So figured go with US Standard as there Yukon gears that did not meet Yukon's high specs.
Thought about taking day off from work and doing the gears at work. Think I have all the tools my 1/2 torque wrench goes to 300 ft lbs and has long handle.

Done couple regears before but been some time so I can get a little frustrated at times with it. I know people say 14 bolt full float is walk in park to a 12 bolt.

I want to replace all bearings as to my knowledge there original to axle. Just trying to find a decent price kit and gear set with out breaking bank.

That gear set should fit. Application charts show it fits all 10.5 inch axles from 1972 thru 2015.

i still say just go 5.13 and be done with it .

700r4/35" tire @70mph

3.73 = 1755 rpm
4.10 = 1929 rpm
4.56 = 2145 rpm
4.88 = 2296 rpm
5.13 = 2413 rpm

stock 700r4/3.08 setup
235/75/15 tire = 1756 rpm @ 70 mph
31x10.50x15 = 1636 rpm @ 70 mph

i was always tolf go min 1 over the correction to stock . but if over drive just go deep .
