Hello all,
I am planning to replace the worn out timing chain on my 6.2 with a Pete Jackson Gear Drive unit from summit racing. Has anyone ever heard anything about these? The idea seems good, and the reading seems impressive, but I know those guys are paid to sell stuff. Not to be honest. Lemme know if you've tired em or heard anything on em.
Thanks
SShultz

The PJ is the same gear drive as the DSG unit that seems to get rave reviews on the various diesel boards...except it's half the price through Summit or Jeg's. I've never heard anything bad about them.

I've met one fella who swears that they are a danger to your engine. He claims that the timing chain absorbs a bunch of shock from the engine, and that switching over to a gear drive puts a lot more stress on various components. He claimed that he has seen a drastic increase in crank failures when there has been a gear drive installed. He complained about the various forums banning him for raising his concerns with the gear drive a while ago, so who knows.

The balancer absorbs the velocity spikes, all the gear drive does is drive the cam and IP...much more accurately. His logic is completely flawed in my humble opinion.

Bad balancers are the major pre-cursor to broken cranks. If you add a gear drive and don't take care of that sloppy old balancer then your crank will eventually break, and it'll have nothing to do with the gear drive.

I'm not a mechanical engineer by any means, but I figured there is always two sides the story, and a guy midaswell post both sides :)

I personally went with a chain, simply cause I didn't have the money to drop on a timing gear setup.

Thanks for the imput! I think I am gonna go with the gear drive. I think I can spair the money for it since I got the truck for only 3000. I'll keep ya'll posted on how I like it just as soon as I get my boots outa the sand and back into some mud and rocks!
Thanks Again

I've read the DSG is a rebadged Pete Jackson unit so Summit / Jegs is the way to go.:D

I found this in Wrench's engine build thread:

Well, DSG does make the reluctor ring they include with the 6.5 electronic kit. Still, the one they sell for the mechainical motors is just the PJ drive with a $170 markup

So, looks like the PJ kit from Jegs/Summit will work on a mechanical 6.5, but not an electronic engine like mine.

I had a timing gear on my motor before the rebuild. When i had the motor rebuilt, i asked the guy if i need to buy a new gear set for the rebuild. The old man said that he would never recommend a timing gear to any customers. He had apparantly seen too much damaged caused by them. Just to prove his point, he pulled the timing cover off my motor and, surpise, the gear had started to grind away at the inside of the cover. Needless to say, i had him install a new chain and cover with the rebuild. Besides they are loud as hell and the sound is anoying after a while.

Here's a vid, where you can here my old motor.

If the gear is grinding away at your cover then it was probably installed improperly. The gear should not make contact with the cover at all.

Your probably right, but i figured it wasn't worth the money to replace i hated the sound of it.

Wish I could hear a side by side comparison :( it's kinda hard to tell in a single video. I do hear a whirring sound I take to be the gears.

Thanks for the post though, it's the first one I've heard:D

"Mild-Built 350"

The vid sounds like a small block with the noisy version of a PJ gear drive. I'm not sure how relevant your experience, or your mechanic's opinion is to this thread.

1. Yes,… it is now what is considered by many to be a "Mild-Built 350". Like I said in the 1st post, the video was before the rebuild and it now has bigger pistons, cam, intake, ARP fasteners and aluminum rockers (and a timing chain).

2. I never claimed to be the Automotive Encyclopedia that is "tRustyK5". SShultz just asked if anybody had experience/opinions and I gave mine.
