Picked the Buick 455 Now what?

The buick and the caddy were both motors put in land yachts, they needed alot of torque to get any sense of speed at all, so they were both designed with alot of low end grunt. I know the other 455s came in some big cars but caddy and buick were the more luxo brands

Hence, the low rpm limit on them.

I did a rering'd 500 in my blazer this summer. With some simple and cheap mods it dyno'd 395hp and 520lb ft of torque on 87 octane pump gas. The fact that I have a very high dollar 530 inch caddy stroker in the basement just means I'm biased.

The Buick 455's regularly hit 5000 rpm as well. The caddy's limit has a lot to do with the large main journals. The Buick 455 did find it's way into a lot of land yachts, but it was also used in the 70-71 GSX which was a low 13 second car in street trim back when tire and suspension tech sucked.

Same with the Olds and Pontiac 455's. Found in GM barges, but also used in performance versions of the brand. Olds had the W-30 cutlass, Pontiac had the later GTO's and the Trans Am's of the day. I don't consider any of the 455's to be rev limited really.

Little update for you guys.

Heres the deal, The guy i'm buying the motor off of, gave me a 350 4 bolt main motor, 305 motor, the 350 has an edelbrock carb on it, tons of other free stuff, The 455 has buick performance valve covers so i'm guessing its a buick 455, it came out of a regal and was suppose to have been built up to 750hp, which i'm not sure I believe. Anyway, the deal is 600 dollars for the 455 with tranny, 81 chevy pickup 8ft bed, brand new inner fenders, rockers, everything. the truck is completely spotless of rust. So what do you think? he said he'll take 300 and let me take everything, So brothers, deal or no deal?

deffinitly...jump on it b4 its gone!

u mean the spotless truck, a455 buick, 350 & 305 sbc and other freebies all for $300? i wouldn't even hesitated!

600 bucks for Buick 455 and tranny which is a 400 I would assume, 81 chevy truck, spotless new inner fenders, doors, rockers, the whole shabang. comes with a tranny transfer case, a bunch of driveshafts, more doors, and a ton of other extra parts. He said I can give him 300 bucks, and take it all, and pay him the rest later.

I already got the 350 4 bolt, 305, and the tons of extras for free. :wink1:

I will def be getting them. :waytogo:

The truck will just be used for parts, cab and all that will go onto my k5 once I get a new frame. As for the 455, i'm at a loss on what to do. I want to rebuild it and supercharge it, do you think it will be worth it? What do you guys think i'll have to do for motor mounts? And if I rebuild and supercharge do you think i'd be better off using an auto or sm465? The truck is going to be a mud and large trail truck, as well as a street driven truck. it will have 10" of lift, 44's, dana 60 14bff, ect. Opinions?

Depends on your budget, but 500 hp on pump gas is within reach without having to go as far as supercharging it...

Well, my buget is, well...as much as I make working. I plan on putting every bit of money I make working into my truck. besides what I need for myself. I'm looking to completely rebuild the motor, bored and stroked if possible, h beam rods, aluminum stage 2 heads, cam, ect. See anything wrong with that? suggestion on parts? I'd really like to supercharge, as thats my goal for the K5. Thanks for the help!

I have a mag here that is a couple of years old. They did a monster cube shoot out with pretty much every large displacement V-8 commonly made. The Buick they got to 528 cubes and it made near enough to 600 hp on pump gas with a single 4 barrel.

If you want I can do some digging and try and find it. I *think* I know where it is, but we just moved this summer so if I don't have any luck it might take me a while.

I can't find the monster big block mag I had. All I did find was the big block shootout issue that Biltit linked. The mag I have has all the part numbers and prices as well as the dyno results. The buick was the only 450+" engine that benefitted from a larger carb when they dynoed it. With the 750 cfm Demon it put down 555 hp and 570 lbs of tq. They saw it was still making vaccum at the top end and tried out a 950 Demon just to see what peak would be. It made 563.7 hp at 5500 rpm, and 576 ft/lbs of tq at 4700 rpm. It also made over 500 lbs of tq from 3000 rpm to 5700 rpm. With the aluminum heads it was about the same weight as a small block too.

All that was with 10.1:1 compression ratio and on pump gas obviously. The cam was pretty tame, so it still had a good idle as well. It was a Comp Cams 274 Extreme energy cam.

Most parts came from a place called TA performance...

Now the bad news...this issue is 5 years old and it cost $8000 to build back then. :doah:
