Picking up a new whip - 1993 GMC Jimmy 4x4

After talking to an older, retired friend of mine about flat towing something behind my motorhome, he mentioned his GMC Jimmy would be a good candidate versus any of my other crazy ideas so we struck a deal.

I haven't gotten any pics yet but its a dark green '93 Jimmy with a (kinda unique for the year model) MPFI 4.3 (versus the TBI), 4x4, leather interior, etc. Pretty loaded for the day in all seriousness.

Anyways, I believe it has 150k on it and it is pretty darn clean with newish tires. I already bought all the towing stuff so I just need to make some brackets to hook the tow bar up to it so I'll be doing that next week.

I'll post pics in a bit.
 
I've got a 93 4door which I've had for 11years. Great little rigs. It has been all over the West Coast. Mine has the push button NP233C which lacks a neutral. Which makes me wonder how you would flat tow it if you had that transfer case. I guess you could always pop off the rear drive shaft.
 
I'm hoping it doesn't have that transfercase but I am not sure yet what it has. If it has that then I will be looking for an alternative transfercase like a NP231C or so.
 
It's running on 5 cylinders so I gotta figure that out. Might mess with it Sunday. Hopefully it's not in the little spider valve assembly under the intake.
 
the new updated spider poppets are much better these days, I would have expected the original to have failed long before this and been updated. My money is on the distributor, either just the cap and rotor or the whole pos.
 
Yeah I did the spider assembly on mine, with the new fuel pressure regulator , and the nut kit which is actually the fuel inlet in the back of the motor with new fuel lines. My regulator actually broke inside the intake and was spraying fuel out of it's side, no wonder why it was running poorly.
 
Those fuel lines coming in through the intake are what's called a nut kit they have a tendency to leak unless they've been upgraded. If you are not sure the history I would do them when you're in there. Probably go with the AC
Delco.
 
Well, I went on RA and paid for my unit to be rebuilt. I have to send it to them and they will send it back. Seems relatively quick and was the best priced option. Here's hoping it's worth a darn.
 
Alright so I changed out the regulator as that is what appeared to be where the fuel leak was coming from on that side and managed to get all the poppet valves unstuck. Once I got it back together it fired right up and ran very well. I took it to the gas station to top off fuel and then to the car wash to get a few years of pollen and dirt off of it.

I drove it for around 20 miles and then came home.

I have to make some brackets this week to hook up my tow bar to it so I'll work on that over the next few days.
 
Well, it's always something.

Drove it around last night and it started running like absolute crap and the brake pedal became hard as a rock.

SES came on also and it was code 32.

For some reason my attention was first drawn to the EGR valve. Gave it a solid tap with a hammer and punch and the idle cleared right up. Drove it again and the symptom came back so I whacked the EGR again and it cleared up and repeat. I could have probably pulled it and attempted to clean it up but for 50 bucks I just bought a new AC Delco on Amazon and I'll get on with the next headache.
 
Man, I can't win. I got the EGR valve in and the truck runs great. I even convinced the wife to take a cruise with the boy up to Landa Park in New Braunfels when disaster struck. I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed spots of fluid dotting the rear window. As I pondered what that would be (considering it wasn't raining) I noticed whitish smoke behind the truck also. About that time the wife asked me what would be causing white smoke lol. I grunted something about how it wasn't good and took the next exit into a gas station. Immediately I smelled tranny fluid and looked under the passenger side to see fluid leaking steadily from the cast aluminum dust cover drain hole. The entire bottom of the truck was covered in fluid and it was just a mess. I checked the fluid level real quick and saw that the level was still registering on the dipstick but barely. Luckily her parents live close to there so we parked it at her place. I've got the sub loaded up and am heading to grab it now but not before I stop at my fav taco house and fuel up.
