Pickup-coil resistance

What do you guys get for a resitance reading between the terminals on your pickup coil?
the book says it should be between 500 and 1500 but mine seems to be at about half an ohm.

there cheap--throw it away

I usually just buy a new one for 15 bucks and trash the one that is doubtful--yours might be fine while you test it,but crap out after it gets hot --..
