A couple of times per year our club has a "picnic" which takes place on a couple of our member's land (within about 5-10 minutes of each other). Not a huge amount of trails but enough to make it interesting for the better equipped rigs in our club:

A little poser RTI action

Nice little rock ledge:

Start of the trail called "Samurai's Revenge"....actually fairly steep here.

Nasty little rock pile....and nice and slick with mud. (78Buford in the background):

Sorry for the sideways pics, but shows how tall the ledge is:

This is the new optional exit out of the trail. Yes, it's steep and still covered in grass and loose topsoil. 3 vehicles actually made it up but it took several full throttle attempts to make it (2 heavily modded Sami's - one had a V-8 on 35" Swampers/Boggers, other had a V-6 on 36" Swampers, both on locked 'yota axles, and a YJ on D60's and 37" Boggers, 78Buford in his 460 powered, 42" tires Ford would have made it but blew out the rear 1350 yoke).

Looks fun!!!! :D :D :D

I see Roy left the Dockers at home..:wink1:

The V-8 Sami on 'yota axles (somewhere around 100" WB) on the rockpile on the Samurai's Revenge trail (same area as shown above).

On the optional exit off the trail...he was the first to try it hence the grass was still there. Doesn't look that steep in this picture, but see above. Doesn't help that the bottom of the notch is full of greasy mud.

6.2 Blazer's rig scored well over 1000 on the ramp (corrected to 20*). The club ramp is 33*. My pile was quite a bit lower...I believe it was 851 (corrected to 20*).

I'm not used to breaking drivetrain parts. I haven't broken anything significant since a 35 spline stub let go in the spring of 2006. For the record, the rear driveshaft is typically connected to the rear D70...not being supported by a piece of orange chain. :wink1:

Buford Shaft broken yoke.jpg

On 78Buford's yoke letting go........I bet he had the big-block turning 4,000-5,000 rpm on the 42's, and he has "only" a 19:1 crawl ratio, so that's some serious wheel speed.

I remember Stroud saying that he could wind out first, but not pull second gear on the hill. As a rough estimate (with the tires aired down, I'm certain they are shorter than advertised numbers) comparing the Sami with a 6,000 rpm small block vs. my 4800-5000 rpm big block:

Sami @ 6000 rpm in 1st gear (27-1 crawl ratio) = all four 35" tires turning @ 24 mph.

Buford @ 4800 rpm in 1st gear (19.7-1 crawl ratio) = all four 42" tires turning @ 30 mph.

That may not sound like a lot, but it is a 20% difference.

Jerry, the picnic event was only for club members.

If you aren't doing anything the second Saturday in June, several of us are wheeling/camping in Vinton...I'm sure we could "sneak you in." :D

Cool....I think TT's headed out there in June...
