The uppers should already have at least holes in the frames for them. My '81 frame didn't require any modification to fit the brackets on except use bolts.
I'm going to pull the second shock and test. I think I can bring down the jarring ride a bit without it...I've never pushed the truck hard enough to have the shocks "fail" on me, so I'm going to see what happens with one. New shock designs should pretty much eliminate the need for dual shocks, unless you want them for looks.
