Some of you know I've been in the market for a new daily driver/tow rig that's 4wd (b/c we tow to the sand)...
I've been pricing out '01-'02 diesel trucks and that's what I've had my head set on but this afternoon my dad and I checked out a local car lot (JH Sanders) who deals in mostly 3/4 and 1 ton pickups from the big 3...

We found an '00 K3500 crew cab long bed w/ 123,000 miles...

They weren't open so we're going back tomorrow after we get off of work to check it out...

Here's my thinking... I could handle the payment on a used diesel BUT it's near my limit for what I want to put out each month... this is completely different than what I was originally thinking but it'll be 1/2 as much each month so I'd have "plenty" of extra funds to do some preventative maintenance as well as fix stuff when the time comes...

So is 123,000 miles something to be afraid of for a big block 4l80e combo?

EDIT: I found the truck listed online... so here are actual pics of it...

I also found the carfax report on it... looks like it was a Texas truck then sold around at auctions before it was shipped out here to Cali... Check it out...

Why do you need a lifted crew cab? I bet you could pick up a late 90's-2000 6.5 TD regular cab 2500/3500 for much less money then a crew cab. Crew cab trucks are hot right now- everyone wants one.

123 is nuthin!
I figured but that's good to hear...

Lifted was the wrong word... it looks like it has a leveling kit (possibly cranked torsion bars) but only to clear some wide 33's, tomorrow when it's daylight and I can talk to them I'll get the scoop...
I'm a fan of the big block vortec so I'm going to stick w/ it although from what I've read the 6.5 works well too...
Crew cabs are hot b/c they're conveinent... if I'm towing over to the coast then I guarantee you I'll have at least 3 people with me so an extended cab just won't work...

Anything I should look for tomorrow that you guys know of?

EDIT: I found pics of it online and updated the first post... I was lucky w/ a google search and found the truck listed...

Ok I talked it over w/ my parents (even though I'm buying it I guess its the right thing to do ;) ) and after reading that Carfax if it runs well and the transfercase/front end are all in working order I'm going to jump on it...
Expect to see pics tomorrow night unless its a pile of junk underneath :)

I fully recommend a 98+ cummins turbo diesel. I paid 6 for mine, even tho it needed lots of work. High miles and still kickin ass. i just rolled 256000 and i bought it last april with 242000. The CTD plus the nv4500 is such a killer combo. I love mine and will soon get a newer version. Mines for sell if your interested. Although its 2wd.

Yeah a CTD would be a sweet setup but they all have a bazillion miles on them and are still more than this truck... I just can't justify another truck that'll turn into a project right now...
The goal is to daily drive this and use it as a tow rig while I tear down the k10 and get it sand ready...

Ive refused myself to turn the dodge into a project. As much as i want to slam it to the ground and lay frame on it, or even power mod it till i got torque out the wazoo. I got to finish the blazer and other priorities.

i have a '99 k3500 with 180,000 miles on it. probably 25% of those miles was towing a 12,000 lb. trailer. the truck towes great and has some nice torque, but the gas mileage is crap. with no load on the truck it probably gets 10-11 mpg. when towing it gets about half that. i have an s-10 as a dd, i pretty much only run the one ton when i need to haul something heavy or large. at half the price of a diesel rig i can see why you would consider the 454, but just be prepared for heavy gas consumption. if i was you, i'd get it back at stock ride heigt and stock tire size.

Yeah Buddyrammit I'm aware of the mileage... I currently daily drive the black '00 C2500 and it has the big block and 4l80e combo like this truck does...

Well we went and checked it out tonight and took it for a test drive. The truck drove great and was smooth as an arrow down the freeway...

It was nice to get the story on the truck though... it has a new 454 in it w/ a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty (comes w/ the papers to prove it) and it just got back from paint and looks great.
It has new brakes and reconditioned rotors on the front and the truck stops on a dime straight as an arrow...

The truck pulls well but had a different feeling than the black C2500 probably b/c of the gearing (the black one has 3.73's and this K3500 has 4.10's)...

Anyways it could use a few cosmetic things (driver's side mirror and one of the handles has a hairline crack, etc.) but nothing a couple hundred bucks @ LMC can't fix.

Oh and the lift is just a 1" body lift to clear the tires which are 33's...

The used car market has been really slow lately and I could tell the owner wanted to get rid of it and he made me a VERY reasonable offer and was at a comfortable monthly payment...

I didn't get it tonight because I wanted to sleep on it. I'm going to go back tomorrow night and seal the deal.

I'm somewhat new to IFS maintenance... @ 123,000 miles what can I expect to replace soon? TRE's?

If you do have to replace the pitman arm HAVE FUN!!! When I had to to do it on my 95 with the same miles it was a pain. First I broke the puller trying to get it off, so of course had to get another one. Then I had to cut a slice in it, heat up to a nice cherry red, put the puller on while it was still glowing, and then it came off. It was a PITA.
