Pics of the new dd/tow rig... '00 K3500 CCLB

Yeah it was fair...

Ok guys this fender flare is being frustrating... have any of you put one on before? There are 2-3 sets of holes (so this obviously isn't the first time a flare has been put on).
It has the studs molded into the flare that snap into the holes drilled through the fender. Then sheetmetal screws hold it on around the lip of the fender... but nothing seems to line up.
When I get the holes for the screws lined up the studs won't line up with the holes in the fender and then when I line those up the holes are off for the screws...

Ok I know that didn't paint a very clear picture but if you've done one of these you'll probably know what I'm talking about...

We're taking off for the mountains tomorrow so it'll have to wait until I get home but I was just trying to get it on before we left...

My 3500

Just picked up my crew cab a couple of weeks ago. 97 4x4 for 2500$. But it's got a new 4l80e with only a few hundred miles on it. But the odomiter is showing 370,000. But it's getting cut up in a few months in the back and getting a set of rockwells. Anyone interested in a dually bed in the near future and a complete ifs front end with the transfercase?

sounds like you need to drill more holes.

That's what I was going to do but my dad cringed at the idea of putting more holes in the fender...

I was just going to put a little paint on the studs then line it all up with the holes for the sheetmetal screws and touch it to the truck. Then just drill where the paint dots were and it should all line up...

Well we're all loaded up and ready to hit the road early tomorrow morning. We're having some pretty big storms this weekend so we decided to leave tomorrow morning instead of tonight for safety reasons...
I checked all the fluids, replaced the headlight bulbs, aired up the tires and loaded up a tool box w/ my high-lift, jumper cables, tow straps, etc so I think we're all ready.
I've been posting some pretty lame pics lately and I'm sad to say these aren't much better... the dark just sucks. :)

But here's my setup...

Those flares are a huge pain in the ass to work with.

That being said, think about it for a second Avery, those things are molded plastic; you might have to bend them a bit to get them to line up perfectly. Drilling more holes is not the answer.

Yeah I realize that... I worked with it for about 30 minutes trying to get it all lined up before I said forget it since I had other stuff to get done before we hit the road...
I was flexing it all over the place but it just didn't want to line up... I'll mess around with it now that we're back in town...

Here's some pics from the mountains...

That thing brings back memories of the two C3500 CCLB work trucks I had in the Marines. Nice.

The front actuator in my '92 Blazer K1500 gave out AFTER I moved to SoCal. Went wheeling one day, used 4x4 a bit, went back into 2wd, then tried to put it in 4x4 to climb a hill to leave and nothing. Put a Posi-Lok in after that and all was well.

My friends' dad's trick for the fender flares was a heat gun. Heat the flares up enough to make them a bit more flexible and install them. By the time they cool you should be able to pop them right in...
...but I would say you're on the correct track to even see if it fits the holes first.

Good thinkin' on heating it up. I'll give it a shot... it'll probably let me flex it around more than when it's room temp.

Ok I did more work this afternoon... I pulled the passenger side rear door apart to take a look at the door lock actuator.
The actuator is riveted in place so I'm going to run by my friend's body/paint shop (I need him to paint the new flare anyways) and see if he has an efficient way to get the actuator out...

After I get that replaced I'm going to get started on the alarm/stereo. :)

I got some work done tonight...
I put a new driver's side mirror on, took off those stupid steps and cleaned it up a little...
Tomorrow afternoon my dad and I are running over to our friend's paint shop to have the fender flare sprayed, so I should be able to get that bolted up in the next few days...
Oh and the new handle came in tonight so I'll get that bolted up tomorrow night...

Yeah the right side of the truck is where the damage was...
I put new bulbs in the other night and used some plastic polish to clean the lenses up a little for the time being...
I'm not as worried about stuff like that but I'm definately getting new lenses for the driver's side down the road...

Use one of those mothers powerballs and their plastic polish on teh lense. It will work wonders.

I used the Meguiers plastic polish and although I do have a powerball for my wheels I didn't think of using it for this...
I'll give it a try and see if it helps but I doubt it...

The fog that's left on the driver's side lense is on the inside....

Tonight dad and I installed a new driver's side outside door handle... OMG what a PITA!!!!

We agreed that if we ever have to do that again we'll just have a body shop do it. ;)

But at least it has a new handle that works great and is nice and tight...

Oh and this afternoon I dropped off the fender flare @ the paint shop. He said he'll spray it and have it by the end of the week. He also showed us how to get it on, and mentioned it's a PITA so have fun. :)

Thanks...

Now I have to decide if I want to build the stereo first or if I want to get the tune by Blackbear and do the exhaust... They'll both get done eventually it's just a matter of which one first. Any suggestions?

ok, you have more power then the wheels can handle as it is. and youre satisfied with its performance towing on the highway, what more do you need? i say stereo.
