I finally got around to checking out the front end of my Sub since I got it out of the dunes 2 weeks ago. Here is the thread with that ordeal....

So I finally pulled got the front end up in the air and played around with the wheels and driveshaft. The hubs and u-joints seem to be OK. I pulled the diff cover, and found this inside:

When it broke(when I was stuck in the sand), I'm pretty confident the front diff didn't rotate at all, as the ring gear looks to be in good shape.

Is this what I need to fix it, I'm a little confused since it says rear. The D44 has an 8.5" ring gear, yes?

And is this something easily installed in my driveway by someone who hasn't done a whole lot of work before?

But you guys know how it is, while it's apart, why not make it better? :D

What about a lock-rite? Seems they're around $300. I do have cromo shafts, but would 39.5" swampers, a 6500# Sub, old external hubs, and a front locker = even more carnage?

The ring and pinion will spin as long as the t-case is in 4WD or as long as the hubs are locked in. Check all of your ring and pinion teeth.

Its easy, you don't have to pull the carrier.

If you get a locker for the front, get an aussie locker. They have a much better reputation than any of the other lunchbox lockers. And yes, a locker will break stuff much easier than an open diff.

Simple to do if the gears look allright . Your going to want to buy as much brake cleaner as you can afford and flush that thing clean , since little shavings are all over your bearings .

I would run synthetic shockproof fluid when your done . It really does cling to the bearings and gears better than normal stuff .

And Diff can spin all it wants with driveshaft , no spiders = no axleshaft movement .
