I orderd new straps from a member on here, but should i replace the gas tank too?

Or should i just sand it down good and put some por-15 on it?

Hard to say for sure, but it does look pretty pitted at the rear part. If it doesn't leak you may be able to give it a couple of coats of POR15 and cross your fingers...

I would say replacing it is a good idea. it's easier to do it all at once. the straps don't like going on and off frequently either

Unless you already have the materials around, it will probably be around $60 to do, plus your time. New tank is around $150. I would buy a new tank and use your time to fab up other things. If you can't tell, time is of short supply to me when it comes to my rig after neglecting the family building it for 2 years.

:D well im 17 and just outa school for the summer. i work about 12-18 hours a week so i gots pletny of time.

yea it sure as hell isint a texas tank. it came from seattle, well canada, and used to have rust all over it.

this is the only area im worried about, ut it looks like its justa little surface rust where the undercoat has flaked away.

i might sand it down and paint it, then forget about it.

there arent any leaks now and hopefully none in the near future :D

If the pitting isn't too bad, don't worry too much about it. Just paint the tank really well, so the salt has a harder time getting to the metal.

One of the tanks I pulled had a fair amount of rust on the very bottom from the skid plate, but it never did leak.
