Back in the '90s when APM (Morgan Hill, CA) built my engine I talked with Felix about adding a supercharger later (roots type). It is now much later.

Other than a thread about an 8.1L that mentions a $5k supercharger setup on a SBC, there isn't much recent in CK5 on superchargers.

Is anyone using a supercharger with a Q-Jet? I want to give this approach some consideration. Is it time for fuel injection and vortec heads if I add a supercharger?

What is fuel economy? How much more tourqe in 800 RPM to 2000 RPM band. I drive like my grandma.

Here is why I ask. My SM465 w/ 3.08 gears is nice on the highway. I don't need overdrive. On hills, some days are good but with an atmospheric change I need to retune or downshift on hills; it is a narrow band of good enough. With worn out 32" tires it was fine on hills. Stop lights could be an easier getgo; even w/ 32s it could of been better. I am tired of screwing with timing advance springs (which made a huge difference).

It could just be that modern engines make a lot more power and I feel slow.

For that one guy who is going to tell me to get some damn 4.56 gears and an overdrive, thank you. I got it. My grandpa used to yell at me too for this stuff.

I don't know of anyone on this site running a supercharger. Between the current popularity of modified LS motors and/or turbos, I'd be surprised if anyone even remembers superchargers are still an option.

Since you said you run 3.08's I figure it's safe to say you're running 1/2 ton axles, right? Do you have plans for axle upgrades to stand up to the newfound power? If a stock 305 can shred a 10 or 12 bolt rear, this needs to be addressed.

Wrong, we have a guy running a supercharger.

Superchargers never were that common, I've never seen one on a truck in person. That answers my question. If it isn't being used it is probably because it isn't very good.

I drive like a grandma, I'm not going to break anything. At 1,500 RPM it couldn't be that much tourqe. I am a big fan of not fixing anything that hasn't broken. I'd probably try forged axles and a better locker before changing axles (clearance of half tons is hard to beat).

I'd save the cost of axles for a dedicated trail rig -- something I don't care about damaging. I have no intention of taking my K5 off-road anymore other than washed fireroads.

Supercharging is a great option for altitude. But as you found, not alot of stuff on here. I would look at the procharger website/along with Whipple, paxton, etc.
Maybe ask over at yellow bullet. Just start reading. You will figure it out.

No, just expensive. Plenty common if you look in the right places...

An old school screwtype supercharger under your carb is a good lower rpm torque builder if done for that purpose. And you would be able to use the qjet still. As opposed to a procharger or turbo.

Lot of money for what it would gain though.

A 1970-71 cadillac 500 in stock form would be WAY cheaper and give you 500ftlb of torque at about 1600 rpm.

Just for reference, lol.

500 cid lol. I used to spend days crawling in mud under trucks looking for engines with my wife's brother. He bugs me about how I used to be cool and now I just play Lego with my kids.

I am thinking three-day weekend bolt-on and recalled that Felix said my setup would respond well to a supercharger if I ever did that. Plus I'd be cool again.

Fuel injection and Vortec heads alone would probably bring things close enough that I'd have the torqe bump.

Just looked in eBay -- new is ~3k.

This is a slow burn idea. A lot is what my wife thinks. She wants air-conditioning. Maybe it is a package deal. Hey Summit... I'd like to order an A/C kit and roots supercharger, right. Either way, the K5 isn't going anywhere.

Just to clarify, a roots blower or screw supercharger will add a ton of torque at 1500 rpm. The off idle grunt is incredible.
Now if you are wanting a vortec or paxton supercharger then they dont start making significant power until 1800rpm or so.
I live really close to magnuson superchargers, several of my friends have them on different vehicles. At less than 1000rpm in second gear they can obliterate their tires at will.

lol 1 out of 77k, yeah I was way off. :surepal:

Bahahaha! I didn't mean it like that. There are probably more that we don't know about, but yeah superchargers aren't very popular in the predominantly rock crawling crowd

Read his solid axle swap, not his wheeler.
That was a newer truck, looked like post-89.

His mud truck was a nice read. He went through some iteration until he found what worked. I liked his comment once he had everything setup and working to pull through the full local mud bog event, which took a decade, "she didn't take a video."
