Actually started to work on my k5 to go wheeling this weekend after it sat for 3-4 months broken "badly bent rear springs" Got the new replacement springs installed and was about to bolt up the 14 bolt, but the damn spring perches were off by 20 something degrees. No wonder the damn springs were so bent. So it looks like I cracked the plug weld and the axle tube spun. :doah::(

I can get a 14 bolt cab and chassis axle for $125. Will this work? I read in the 14 bolt bible that it is the same as the srw axle, just the hubs are different offset. Is this the only difference? What about spring perches, will I have to move them?

save your self the headache and get a 3/4 ton 14 bolt FF out of a truck and bolt it up. No mods needed.

I knew that, just for some reason thought it was the other way around.:doah:

I bent the sh!t out of my truss. Wheeled it one time with out it and I think that is what broke it. Found a housing for $60 right down the street from me. Going to weld the tubes all the way around the tube where it meets the housing and build an overkill truss for it. There will be no way it will happen again.

Its the van axles that are the same WMS-WMS, I'm not sure what the C&C's are. both the C&C's and van's you will have to move the perches. If it makes you feel any better my axle is also bent, but I'm just gonna run it to the death--I am having a hard time finding a Van width.

Yeah I finally figured that out. The one I found is a srw 1ton so I will have to move the perches. I'm not going to complain since I am only paying $60 for it.

what happens when you spin an axle tube? why is it so bad that you can't just fix the problem?

C&C axle is the same size, but the hubs are wrong AND brake backing plates are in the wrong place 'cuz they're dually, so you'd need to use weld-on disc brackets or REALLY long bolts and tubes/pipes, if that makes sense.

Don't have the know how and equipment to make sure it is rotated back to where it should be. It will be just easier to pick up this housing and swap all of my stuff to it.

what i mean is, what problems does this cause?

The whole tube rotated in the center section... The plug weld broke and let the tube spin, thus allowing the spring perch to rotate with it which took out the spring.... Hopefully that explains it, seems pretty straight foward to me... spun tube = bad

gotchya. didn't think about the spring perch. would it be true that this could not happen if the spider gears were welded on a 14bff? b/c then it would also have the axle shaft preventing the tube from spinning?

nope
the tube is completely independent of anything inside the axle

i really want a van width as well, but cant seem to find one either

then again i haven't looked that hard

so what exactly is the axle shaft bolting to on a ff axle?

-the noobinator.

man, i'm a dumbass. :haha: ofcourse the axle shaft couldn't bolt to the axle tube, or the damn thing would roll down the road w/ the wheels! i've had mine apart and apparently don't remember what it looks like. :haha:
