My 77 pings like crazy. What way do I turn the dizzy to make it stop? Towards the brake booster or the heater?

Depending on your compression ratio, are you running the correct octane? Summer temps cause detonation. You may need to bump up the octane some to prevent. If it doesn't ping any other time.

isn't there something with a different temp range of spark plugs you can do to try to help with a pinging issue too?

Have you been messing with the timing already? If so invest in a good timing light and set it correctly and it should solve any detonation issues. and if you have a stock engine then I'm sure you'll be fine running the same octane fuel as always. If you get it adjusted correctly and it's still pinging then try a step up in octane cause in the summer months your engine does run a lot hotter and is more prone to pre-detonation. Good luck.

Why not try setting the timing with a light? If its advancing to fast try heavier springs in the dis.Your total advance could be too high too fast.Could be just running too lean also.Could also be too hot a plug.

Thanks for the replys guys. My 77 is a yard truck, it runs on dyed gas all the time.I changed the distributor about a month ago,and it`s fine around the farm, but if I take it down the road it will ping. So I`ll go out and move it today. THANKS GUYS!!

Lowering spark plug heat ranges can reduce pinging but if it just started doing it that would only work as a bandaid. Ive used colder plugs in the past but if you go below the correct heat range to reduce pinging your plugs will foul out faster.

I would check the ignition timing as the first source of the problem since that is what you have most recently changed. If that doesnt fix it pull the plugs and examine them, reading plugs can tell you a lot about the motor.

Fixed the ping, much better now. The motor does foul plugs, and smokes when I start it, but it never gets driven too far. I`t does alot of start and shut off. Thats just the way it is for what I use it for.

PONG!

sorry, just could not stand it any longer.........
