Pinion Nut

When I put a new yoke on my dana 60, my gear guy told me to just count the threads on the pinion and tightened it back up that far. Well when I went to replace the seal this weekend I noticed the pinion nut had backed off.

My question is are those nuts supposed to be reusable and if so should I put some lock tight on it and just let it be. I had to borrow a 1 inch impact to get it off the first time and I'm worried i may not be getting it tight enough now with just a breaker bar.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

I've reused them, but the ones I've dealt with (10 bolt) were all crimped style locking. Once they go on, that should really be their only use. Especially if yours has already backed off.

If the D60 has a crush sleeve, you can search for posts where the "right" procedure for messing with the pinion nut is posted. I've done it the "wrong" way (large bar, lots of force) and had it work, but that's more than likely luck.

When you say crimp style how can you tell. The nut on my 60 had indentions on the sides of the nut. Two on one side then two opposite those.

When I took mine off it was pretty obvious that the center threaded portion wasn't perfectly round. Since they weren't loc-tited or have any other sort of locking device, no other way to keep it in place.

Again, D60 COULD be different, I only know how the 10 bolts are setup.

Anybody know the torque requirements of should I just count the threads on the pinion like before?

Chevy dana 60's (and most dana axles) use shims to set the pinion bearing preload. That means you can take the yoke off, replace the seal and/or yoke, install a new yoke and just torque it down (somewhere in the range of 200 ft. lbs., look it up for whatever axle you're dealing with).

If the diff has a crush sleeve, you have to disassemble the diff, replace the crush sleeve and crush it until you have the correct pinion bearing preload.

NEVER reuse a pinion nut. When they back off they usually take the ring and pinion setup with them.

i just had to replace my seal and found my nut was almost completely off. i just replaced the seal and tighten her down with a breaker bar. idk how it's gonna last but i have 3/4 ton stuff to put in it anyhow

The D60 uses shims for pinion bearing preload so you can just zapp the nut off and back on. The proper torque for the nut is 260 ft. lbs. and a NEW nut should always be used. If you're going to chance using a used nut then i would use some locktite and also stake the nut after it's torqued.

I have always replaced the nut with a locknut from the local hardware store. I take the old one in and show them. This has been on a Hi Pin D60 and it should be the same for yours. I also put red loctite on the threads to keep the nut from ever backing off.

Check out Billa Vistas article on the Dana 60.....http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/60_front/index.html

It has all the info you will ever need or want to read:)

Your're right, that is a whole lot of info. Thanks for the input from everyone. I'm gonna go get a new nut to replace the old one.

I guess i need to pop the cover and check the ring and pinion. I hope its not messed up.

Thanks Again
Mark
