I'm trying to put in a new pinion seal in my front 10-bolt. I finally got the old one off only to find out that the seal i got from AutoZone doesn't look like the one on the truck, nor does it fit. Did they make different versions of the 10-bolt? The gears had 1978 engraved so i figured this was the stock axle.

The seal in the middle is from AutoZone for a '78 K10.

Most likely you were given a seal for a Dana 44 model front axle. Go back and ask for a 1985 year model K-10 ( The parts persons listing should only list a 10 bolt in that year and it will fit a 1978 10 bolt as well ) .
Sometimes unknowledgeable parts people need some help with multiple options in a given year model.

Make sure you know the correct way to reinstall that yoke or you will destroy the ring, pinion and bearings.

Its been covered many times on this site, search if you don't know how to do it.

Thanks, I can't find any front axle seals instock. Would a rear 10-bolt pinion seal work?

No, I had this problem too...apparently for my k5 (1984) they dont have ones for a k5 with a 350, but they do for a 305...  Something about it was a more popular model...dont understand how it affects the axles though.

Think about what you are asking for at the parts counter - You are asking for a front AXLE seal not a pinion seal for the front housing . Some parts people do not know the difference and just go by what the screen in front of them pulls up by key words given.

Yes , the rear pinion seal will work - it is the same .
And remember what 38377K5 said up above about replacing the yoke - if you do not do it right you will kill the pinion bearings very quickly . The most sure fire method is to replace the crush sleeve at this time - but it involves taking the carrier out of the housing.
