Ok so I have an engine that is a 91 tbi and on the drivers side head there is a pipe plug. A 3/8" ratchet will not fit into it though, nor will a 1/4". It is square and seems like a 5/16" would fit but I have never seen anything that is square drive like this. I really need to get it out so I can put in my temp switch. Any thoughts?

edit: oh yea and the heads are off of a tbi 305 if that matters.

maybe metric?

or is it so tight that it just wont grab?

i had that problem with my plug right above the oil filter, was gonna take it out to put in a oil press sensor and it was so tight that even the right size square end would eventually just spin around and wear out the hole

it is an odd sized plug. I had the same question week or so ago about water pump plug and drivers side head plug. Everyone grinds down a 3/8 extension and pulls it out. Mine was not sturdy enough to hold up so I'm stuck till I can drill it out. GL.

How about using the right size allan or torx bit?

I hate to go to those extremes, but I know people do it for other stuck fasteners. If it was just oversize enough to get good purchase, I'd think it would work.

I think I understand what you guys are saying now...the earlier heads had the larger holes, while later are smaller, which might be the determining factor? Never bothered to look at my Vortecs to see what they used...

I tried using an allen head, but it wouldnt work just spun in the whole when too much force was applied. I thought about grinding down my allen bit so it would work but then I would have to buy a new one which is about $10. I think I will try a 3/8" extension since I have a bunch of them. I will let you guys know what happens.

Yea the last engine I had the heads had a bigger hole than these heads do.

You need this. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...8&group_ID=259&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

Well since I am a cheap ass I just used one of the 10 3/8" 3" extensions I have and grinded it down til it fit. Worked like a charm!
