Well guys I rolled back into town this evening after a great weekend with the Chevyin crew (Chris, Garry and their Dad)... they were so cool and showed me the ropes as far as actually gettin' a fullsize rig through the dunes (I've been on quads but with those its more of a point and shoot...not much technique to it for the most part)...

I was just going to upload a bunch of pics but decided this would save time and space so I put some of them together in a movie clip...I didn't have too many pics but its sort of a sequence of events for the weekend...

Oh btw chris & garry...I figured out why that trailer is so freakin' heavy as well as why the ramps are so short....

Its a tilt trailer! lol yep iono how we all missed that but in the front there is a handle welded to a piece of threaded rod that acts like a big bolt...if you unscrew it then put some weight on the rear of the trailer the whole thing tilts and makes it super easy to drive on and off....BUT that also explains why its so heavy...it has a sub-frame as well as the top deck... ;)

Wow, looks like a great trip Avery. And I am in love with that K5, it is the only other 80 that I have seen. There are lots of older, and newer ones around here, but mine is the only 80 I have seen. Of course that one has way less rust than mine does.

Good video Avery.....

I'd add only that the tow strap around a tow ball is a "no no", so put that on your list of things to never do again (dangerous). Get a simple receiver point with a D-ring shackle for your toolbag....they're not expensive, and will help you look like a pro next time out. :thumb:

No pics of the famous toolbox??? :D

:usaflag:

Looks like you had a great time Avery. That 1st gen in one of the last pics was sick!

EDIT: Where`d you get those mounts for the shackles on the front of your rig?

Not bad, not bad at all. Cool pics and narration.

lol no...no pics of the toolbox but I think it was a great buy :)

Yeah Ben...there are pics of it on ORU's site...it was an incredible truck and the tow rig was just as sick...they came out for the day just to fool around in the dunes...

Oh and lectric80 you might not believe this but that '80 k5 was under water in the river that empties into the ocean :) They said you could stand on the roof and get your feet wet lol...but they got it all cleaned up and running again, that thing was a beast out there...

Hi Avery, I am currently at Pismo for the week and was wondering about the bonfire/campfire you had at night. Are you allowed to have one at Oceano? Not sure because my daughter wants us to have one on the beach sometime this week and I was not sure what locations allowed it.

Normally I'd agree, but we were doing a simple pull with no inclines, the strap wasn't gonna come off the ball. But yes, Im looking to find a receiver hitch with a a large hook on it.

Chris

I was thinking that or just get a pintle hitch since it has that cap that comes over the top that locks into place...we had the one on the black truck already but like ya' said it wasn't that big of a deal...

You can make one anywhere...just dig a little hole, throw some wood in and light her up...

There are two ramps that go down onto the beach...at the entrance on the second ramp up on the street there are guys on the side of the road that sell bundles of fire wood so if ya' need some its cheap...

Great! Thanks for the heads up on the firewood because we need some. :D

Looks like you used the claws this outing instead of the AT. Too bad you couldn't bring the other tires to see which ones work better. But, I know how much of a pain it is to change tires out on the dunes.

You can have a fire anywhere on the beach. The only thing the rangers ask, is that you let it burn out. That way there are only ashes left.

Yeah but I'm going to sell them b/c although they worked ok they dug in quite a bit and didn't perform well enough to justify keeping them...especially when I watched Garry's '80 K5 with open diffs, 3.73's and 33" BFG AT's do really well out there....

I have that set of 35" BFG's that I run on the street so I think I'm going to just stick with those...maybe get them mounted on some black rock crawlers ;)

The Claws should have done fine if you aired down. How much PSI were you running around on the sand?

Oh don't get me wrong they did great out there but the BFG AT's did just as well and the only reason I keep these claws around is for the sand but if the BFG's are just as good then I see no point in keeping them...

By the end of the weekend I believe I was at 15psi in the back and 20 in the front....I know I could have gone lower but I just wasn't getting any squat out of them and I was afraid of losing a bead...

I run pismo all the time and as far as the air pressure I run 8-10 lbs in mine. I have lost a bead a time or two but it was due to my error. I was new and didnt know how to "read" the sand. I reccomend carrying a can of starting fluid and a lighter, a lonnng lighter like for staring BBQ's with. Dont use matches unless you dont like the hair on your hands. If you loose a bead, jack up truck, clean the sand from the bead, and then spray 1 short burst of starting fluid into the tire. Then take your lighter and put it to the bead opening and light. It will "blow" the bead back into place. Did I mention 1 short burst? Less than 1 second is a short burst. Not like the burst you use when you take a big ol' crap and spray air freshner afterwards.:p: As far as jacking up the truck in the sand the best way is to carry a small bottle jack with screw top and a small tractor disk. The tractor disk is used to put the jack on so that it will not sink in the sand, although oddly enough the sand dosent sink more than an inch without the disk. The disks are used to plow fields if you are wondering. I dont know your background. You can usually get em free.

I popped a bead in the dunes one time. I was still green, too low of pressure in the front, didnt read the sand correctly while turning.... pop. Right on the side of comp hill during a heavy night no less. lol

By the time we'd jacked the truck up, dug a hole around the tire, and let the spare down... it had popped itself back on the bead. lol I got lucky, all I had to do was pump it back up. :)

I have seen someone do the starter fluid trick out there before though, I stood back and watched. :D It worked.

I’ll say this in the nicest way I know how. Your rear shocks are upside down. Cools pics though. Very nice truck.
