pissed

if its backfirin thru the carb, i thougt that meant its waaay too advanced? cus to backfire thru the carb, its gotta fire with the intake valve open. thru the exhaust and its too retarded and firing with the exhuast valve open. good question though on wether the tranny downshifts. cus if it doesn't, its boggin the motor and its outta its power band. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif but, i dunno. theres a lot of variables to tryin to figure out the exact problem without trial and error methods.

Um... I don't want to sound like a dumb ass here... BUT... have you checked the firing order? It should be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Also check for worn wires on cylinders 5 and 7. Those two cyl's are known for arching thru the ign wires. Good luck finding your problem(s).

wait?

thats the firing order?

what would it do if it was off?

engine has 11k miles on it
and its backfiring through the tailpipe

i thot it was the fuel filter gone bad cause when i come up on a hill that levels out and i let off the gas real fast it wants to die....also if i stop in a hurry, or in 4wd and let off the gas it dies.

Fuel pump ive thought abuot also...

if its out of order its gonna run real shitty,

I didnt read all the other posts so i dont know if this has been said but, Check the vaccum advance, if youve ever taken the rotor off, then you couldve messed up the vaccum acvance weights that are under it, if they are over lapped then the vaccum advance wont work correctly, or at all... make sure those arent over lapped, My truck was acting the same way as you described and that was the problem, Along with the distributor being a tooth off.

My dad's '98 Chevy with a V8 had a fuel filter so clogged it would not get over 50mph with the pedal to the metal. I changed the filter and fixed the problem. It also made the trans shift real wierd because it could not get enough rpms to down shift or shift properly for that matter. Also the more gas you gave it the worse it got. So 1/4 throttle it acted OK, but more than 1/2 throttle it would bog out. I had a '85 K10 with a strong 350 with low miles that the fuel pump was bad and you could only tell when you kicked it into passing gear. But then it would just nose dive and then surge. At normal throttle though you could not really notice. Changed out the fuel pump and no more problems.

Your motor is starving for something; either spark, fuel, or air. The hard part is figuring out which one. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

ill put a 5 inch air filter on
see about a fuel filter/pump
and then distributor lastly...i assume thats the correct order of price? (low to high? how much is a fuel pump?)

A fuel pump for yours should not be very expensive. It will be getting at it that makes it a little bit difficult. It is low on your block close to the frame, but its a do it yourselfer. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

just to throw something out there that you might not have thought about... you might have a fried head gasket. not compleatley blown out but leaking through a cylinder wall. i had the same set of problems with a 350 i was running in my firebird and when i ripped down the motor it had 2 partially blown head gaskets and the intake lobe on the #6 cylinder was flattened out a bit. just a my .02.

thats crossed my mind as well...lets hope and pray tho, lol

cant afford to fix that anytime soon
