The time has come and the funds are available to put some new shoes on Sarge (the K30), the swampers that are on it now were a temporary solution and were never the size I wanted, but they were cheap and I was on a deadline building it. I've had lots of TSL's over the years and it's time for a change, I'm using H1's so the selection is limited in the 40" range.
After lots of reading, talking to those who have them etc I think I've decided on a set of Rockers :D

The question, I read/ heard somewhere that the 42's have a softer compound then the 39's ......anyone know if this is true ?? I really had planned on a 40" tire but seeing there is only like a $37 difference between the two it's got me thinking about 42's.

Any other comments, suggestions, opinions or input is welcome. This truck does see street time (not a DD by any means) so road manners do matter, I'm not into mud bogging but obviously I do encounter it on the trail. :D

Josh - I have owned two sets of Pitbull Rockers. The first set was a 37" radial back when i still drove the truck the two hours to rausch. As far as the street goes, once they were broken in i didnt need to worry about small talk on the trip up, they took care of that. They had a very nice jet like howl that resonated throughout the cab. I also had two shops tell me they were " unbalancable". With the doors off i found myself screaming over them and once I even lost my voice ( I talk alot). Unfortunatley they hooked up to the point that they destroyed my dana44 shafts regularly. I sold those along with the D44 and stepped up to the 39.5's Bias Ply. I had planned to purchase a set of 42's originally but i got a killer deal on the 39.5's so i pulled the trigger. What sucks is they only come in one width 16.5", I run a 9" rim without issue but I did cut a tire because the tire wrapped around the rim coming off a rock ledge at Big Dogs. Pitbull recommends a miniumum 11" rim to run these tires. I have also heard on pirate that the 42 compound is softer but i couldnt say myself. With 15 psi my 39.5's on a 9" rim are just over 38.5" tall. Off the truck there a true 39.5". My brother in law has set of the 42's. they measure 43" off the truck and a true 42" with weight on them :eek1:. I was very jealous rolling them up to my baby tires. I would love to be there when your breaking them in:woot:

:D Can't wait to try them out but I know it is going to be awhile before I will be able to.

You might want to call around. I picked my 42" Rockers up as blems and they were $100 off per tire. I still cannot tell why they are blems and they still have full warranty.

the 40" pitbull is stupid wide too. I'd do 42, couple guys here run them and like them.

I have had ( the 42s were mine and the 39s were a buddys) them side by side.

If there is a difference in compound I couldn't tell.

I love my 42s the 39s are just to wide they prevent taking some lines.

I'm really leaning toward the 42's :pimp:, I've got the clearance for them to fit and I really don't want to regret spending the money on 39's and always wishing I had just stepped up and went big.

Plus Jacob thinks big tires are cooler, and how can I argue with a 6 year old that thinks Sarge is the coolest thing ever :D

Well I may end up with 39's after all :haha: going to check out a set tomorrow that are supposedly "like new"........we will see; it would free up enough funds to do a doubler  :D

I have a set of 42" Rockers on my K5 and like them a lot. I used to drive it on the street and they were fine. I balanced them with BB's and they rode much better than my old TSL's.

I trailer it now when I do get around to wheeling it, but they have held up very well to the abuse they have been put through over the years.

Even the 42's are wide though. I wouldn't mind if they were a bit narrower, but I still like em.

I wanted to see what those tires looked like, so I googled "42" rockers"... this is what I got:

:doah::haha:

I run the 42" bias ply on 16.5's

Love them!
Did a 5000 mile round trip last summer and could barely notice the wear.
Used steel shotgun shot to balance.
70 mph for 3-4 hours straight no problem.
Will definitely put a set on the wife's rig when the time comes.

Since you have both (tsl and rockers) would you say the road manners and wear charcteristics are very different between the two?

They are like night and day.

When we returned from Moab last year the TSL's were down a good 3/16" or more..:eek1:

Could barely see the ware on the Pitbulls.:D

As far as ride goes the Pitbulls are slightly quieter in my opinion.
Both rigs were fine at hwy. speeds.

Thanks  exactly the kind of answers I was looking for :waytogo:

I think im just going to go for it and order some 42" rockers :woot: ......

but only because they dont make thornbirds that big .........:haha:

Screw thorn birds lol. You would NOT get around in the sand with those. Aired down to 2 psi they still don't even squat :doah. Just dig and dig all day long lol

Glad to help!

You should be very happy with your choice.:waytogo:.

I have the 39s, the vendor I bought mine from has the 42s on his buggy. I can't tell the difference between the two compounds if there is one.

The width difference is a toss up on the terrain you wheel. I tend to float in our snow a little better with my tires, despite him being a buggy (he's running one of Shannon Campbell's old solid axle rigs) and me being heavy, but there's a lot of times the extra diameter helps. I went with the 39s because I didn't have enough gearing to handle the 42s at the time (the difference in diameter is like 4-6 inches), actually I could barely handle the 39s until I got 5.38s. If I'd had the gearing, I probably would have gone with 42s just for the diff. clearance since we wheel so much rock in the summer, but I think it would have hurt me in the snow.

I've run mine on 10" rims since I got them and never had any issues with the width. They're like 10.75" now that I made them in to beadlocks, but that was just during this past Christmas.
