Howdy, just put a new Redhead Steering gear in my 87 K5. The pitman arm (pinch bolt type) seems to be really tight going back on. Is it safe to hammer it back on? Or will this damage the steering gear? What’s the proper technique please? Hammer something onto the pinch bolt gap to spread it? Appreciate the help. Thanks!

Typically those go on easy, if it’s lined up and cleaned.

Make sure no teeth are smashed, make sure it’s very clean and lined up properly. Rubber mallet yes, BFH no

I have used a flat bladed screw driver to drive into the gap to remove and install mine. Should be able to "tap" it on. NO big hammer. Also works on the trail in Moab, when you have to reinstall the seal, 3 times in 3 days. LOL Thanks A1 Cardone!

Photo for reference. This is not the type that slides on loose and has a big nut to drive it on completely. It fits tight from the start, and uses a sideways pinch bolt as a key. Thanks.

Thanks, that’s my next attempt. Appreciate it!
