Got a 2WD steering box the other day. Did not come with a pitman arm on it or the nut. Anyone know off hand what the thread size and pitch is? Is it anything special or oddball?

Rene

no idea on threads or size but i have some around if anything else, if you have bad luck, dont skimp out, try and get replacement, GM parts counter or LMC, etc, or snag one off parts truck, use thread locker, just because you find one at local mom and pop hardware store that goes on doesnt mean it will not strip(grade of steel) or fit right or stay tight or contact against the pitman arm correctly(affects torque reading and such)

im sure you realize all that though :D

good luck

Well, you got a thread pitch gauge? Maybe at work?

You could also take the box to the hardware store/Napa and see if they have anything that threads on there. Or if ya don't wanna take the heavy ass box, just pull the sector shaft and take that with you.

7/8" X 14 nut.

Nut is a 1/2" thick with a lock washer.
Need a 1 5/16" socket to remove it.

Same 'thickness' as a jam nut then. I knew somebody here knew. Thanks!

Joe, taking the box or sector shaft into a hardware store was what I was trying to avoid...because I don't have a thread pitch guage. :)

Ron, happen to have a torque spec for that? I am gonna guess 150lbs or so...

Help!

I think I saw 7/8x14 nuts on the HELP! rack at pep boys, for a rear axle pinion nut--maybe the same??...as for torque,I dont know, but all the pitman arms I take off are put back on with a breaker bar and a short cheater pipe, and I pull pretty hard on it--havent had any back off yet...

180 ftlbs for the nut.

Instead of taking the box or shaft into a store... Just see what wrench will fit over the threads.
For 7/8" it is either 9(course) or 14 (fine)
