Alright guys, my trans has finally shown that I am not going to get much further before it gives out completely, and winter is here. So I need to plan on rebuilding my T350 probably within the next month or so.

I found a kit at Autozone and Napa, although the Napa kit is higher priced and might be the way I go, but I need to know if there is anything that isn't included in the Autozone kit that I would need to be worried about.

The AZ kit includes all of the following:

Gasket kit, intermediate band, single wrap, intermediate friction .098" (60 teeth), forward and direct friction .098" (20 teeth), reverse friction .098", filter, pump bushing, output shaft bushing, extension bushing, intermediate steel .068" (7 teeth), forward and direct steel .068" (12 t), low and reverse steel .068" (17 t), modulator, sealing ring kit.

I will also be replacing the torque converter of course. I am more worried about the pump, since I can't seem to find one at any parts stores. Is this something that is worked out in the rebuild, or is it something I am going to have to order from TCI or someone else?

The problems I am having are:

1. Reverse requires a raise in RPM's before it will engage. This just started during the deer hunt last week, and appears to be worst when the trans is cold.
2. First gear will also not engage when cold without raising the RPM's, and will disengage when I stop or even stay off the throttle. While coming down off the mountain I could feel the first gear engage and disengage. This meant I had to use a lot more brakes than I like to use, especially with a trailer on the back.
3. The detent for the shift seems to be worn out. Even a slight bump of the lever will move it in and out of neutral. This isn't a big issue but I would like to address it while I have the trans torn apart. I believe this may not be in the kit, but hopefully it is something that can easily be fixed.

Everything else seems to be fine, it shifts fine, and once it warms up the problems disappear. My concern is that I use this to get to work when the snow is flying, and a first gear slip like this could cause a loss of control.

So, any other parts I would need? Any recomendations on upgrades to do to ensure a good long life? Please keep in mind, the budget is really tight right now while I try to provide my typical overload Christmas to my kids.:D

For hard parts, try a local trans shop. They may have a complete rebuilt pump on hand to sell or the parts you need to do it. A lot of shops have no interest in selling parts to the public, but you only need to find 1 that does. Sure you can get parts online, but there is bound to be something you need that you're not aware of until you tear it apart. So local pickup saves time.

My advice is to get a manual for the trans and prep out a lot of space to lay the parts. Tables or shelves covered with newspaper work great. You can write down the part name or the step # from the manual as you lay the parts out on the paper. If you don't have a good parts washer setup, just buy a case of brake cleaner. You want every part super clean as you assemble.

Get yourself a GM service manual for your truck, or a T350 specific manual....that will help a bunch. I have dealt with COAN transmissions, they have a great tech dept.

I will check them out and compare pricing with transtar that Chaddy listed.

Thanks Chaddy. I will give them a call next week when I start gathering parts.

I am building a new workbench for my garage this weekend. It will be 8' long 3' wide. I also have some shelves if I need the extra space, so the paper idea works well. I can use the roll of butcher paper I have to cover everything. I am going to try to grab a small parts washer from HF, I have been wanting one for a while.

A buddy of mine has done a couple 350's and he has a few manuals I am borrowing to do this. He also said he could come over to give me a hand if I need it.

Guess this will add to my knowledge base. And I can also reseal my 205 while I have it out, since I know that some seals are going on it.

when you doing it man?

I have some special tools that make the job easier, I am by no means an expert but I play one on the internet:D:D

Shift kit for sure, the trans go kits are just fine. I really don't think you need anything more than a stock rebuild kit

To keep your trans going for now try lucas transmission fix. That stuff works!

Also helicoil the 4 holes where the adaptor bolts onto the trans. These can and do strip out well actually the bolt just pulls the aluminum threads out.

I have a couple books too let me know what you need maybe I can make it down

Don't know exactly when yet, trying to work out the budget to ensure I get Christmas done and this done. If all goes well I should have this done before the end of Nov when the snow really tends to fly.

I will try some of the lucas stuff to get me by until I can get it pulled and done.

Good call on the adaptor stuff, isn't it 3/8" bolts? If so I already have some helicoils to put in.:wink1:

I will let you know what is happening as I get closer, I just need to have the parts all there and ready to go before I pull it. Gotta spend this weekend getting the garage all organized and cleared out so I have room for Krusty.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe any of the trucks got the lockup converter version of the th350, right?
