I'm just a novice but I've been researching plasma cutters. I think I would like to try to replace the adhoc sheet metal cargo bed, I've rebuilt with steel diamond plate. And for this project I think I need a plasma cutter. For those who have used them/own them what's the word on them. I found a company that sells them for about $400.

what is the company and unit? Not sure what you are looking to know. Thickness of material most often to be cut with it? Max thickness you want to be able to cut? Those are the 2 most important things. Power supply available? 110 or 220?

choices

This is one model I was looking at. The metal I'm cutting will be 3/16 max the rest would be sheet metal. I guess I'm trying to find out how hard it is to use, maintain, and master. I really don't know much about them.

Here's what I have,

Cuts steel and aluminum like a laser knife....it is the bomb....:D

If you can cut with a torch,,plasma cutters are a piece of cake.

It takes a pretty steady hand to cut stuff freehand,,making a few simple templates really help.

Use a straight edge ( even an old wooden 2x4 will work because it cuts so fast the steel barely gets hot) and you can make a perfectly straight cut,,no jagged cuts,,no slag to grind down.

One thing a plasma cutter will not do is make a cut where there is a space between the tip and the cutting surface ( say like,, a shock bracket in a tight space )
where a torch would still cut if you were 1/2 inch away from the steel,,
a plasma cutter must be very close to the surface ( 1/8 " ) because it is basically sustaining the arc from the tip to the surface....you pull back too far and you loose the arc and cutting stops. they are great for fab work,,,
but not as good as a torch for " demolition " work....

As far as maintenance,,keep it fed with good dry air,,, keep the tip clean...go for the 220 volt model....

I have a parker plasma cutter and have had good luck with it they are worth checking out as they are substantialy less than most.

I have a Parker as well. 40A + Turbo so 50A.

Mine will sever 1" , and I use it for everything. I paid around 500 , and it is Dual Voltage as well . Talk to parker their service is top notch , I have called at weird times about a cord or stupid stuff , and they rock.

The Parkers and Force Cuts look like the exact same units... didn't realize you could get a decent plasma that cheap.. I really need to start shopping one of these...

If anyone I would call Parker. I have a buddy that is friends with the owner , and is building him a bumper using his parker. Like I said first rate support , and great price. I have had mine a few months , and it is definitely paid for itself.

x2 I have hade mine for 2 years or more and no problems. I also sprang for the 50A model.

Agreed, got mine for $299+ 10amp upgrade ($50 I think). CS is excellent, I believe Jim is who ive dealt with. Only problems were one went with a bang, replaced immediately and shipping paid both ways. Also the trigger broke but a friend was using it so I cant say why. I dont bother with the 110 though, just 220.
Check em out, sometimes they have a deal on Ebay.

I also have a Parker but one of their combo machines. No problems for over 2 years. Phil Parker has all the consumables available and so far customer service has been good.
The plasma is good and the TIG feature is sweet.:wink1:

No body could match their shipped price to Hawaii.

I just bought the 50 amp Parker..... stoked......

What about a Thermal Dynamics? There top of the line no?
