plasma questions

My dad ran across a deal on a plasma cutter from a guy at work. Doesn't know a whole lot about it but what features should he look for? He said he knows its 220V 40amp. supposed to be a $1000 unit. not sure of the brand. what would a 40amp unit be capable of cutting through?

40 amp would/should cut 1/4 or 5/16... if not more... what kind is it? for 1k sounds like an esab... how much is he asking?

not sure about the price. My dad was just curious how big of a amp rating he should get. he has some pretty extensive plans for a cougar and wants to be able to cut frame rails, some plate steel and the like.
