play in the pinion, ring gear mesh, bad?

I just climbed under my truck to check my u joint since i have a good vibration going. Check it... nothing wrong wiht it. I starting turning my driveshaft when I realize I don't htink I shoudl be able to do this. Should I be able to turn my driveshaft about 1/4 - 1/2" either way before it hits the ring gear?

my friend thinks my spiders are done. I agree seeing as it chirps the tire like a tight posi going around corners but umm its open.
