Trying to take apart my 10 bolt to rebuild it a little better (might put new discs, hubs, etc.)

I have the 4 prong socket for the spindle nuts but I have broken them before and I don't want to brake this one (they aren't cheap).

So I have the hubs out and I'm ready for the spindle nuts, but I gave it a try with the big bar (carefully, not to strip the prongs) and it won't budge. Its hard to keep the damn socket on and pull hard on the bar in an effort to not strip it.

Would a torch help by heating it up a bit? what else can I do to get this thing apart??

can you get a hammer and chisel in there? I know its the old redneck way of getting those spindle nuts off, but a little bit of impact on it, might break it loose... Dunno whats cheaper, that socket of the spindle nuts... Its been awhile since ive bought either...

Did someone over tighten it? or did water get in there and rust it on? if the latter, Soak in PB blaster....

My D60 spindle nut socket looks like this, Can you get a D44/10bolt socket in this style?

It would be a hell of a lot stronger.

I was going to make the exact same post, i have several spindle nut sockets and most of them are this style that don't slip off.

/\ thats nice, I'll look for one after I break this one! lol.

I might try your idea silver84k5 and I'll have to get some more PB blaster. This truck is old and has been sitting for over a year. The grease is very gritty and black in there so that can't help either.

Another idea I have (need a partner though) is to put my big bar on there with the socket and put a tube on the bar (for more length). I would hold the socket on there as tight as I could, while partner pushes down on bar/tube (obviously being very careful not to hurt/break anything)

any of you guys want to come over and help? I have fridge full of beer...

I used to put a jack stand right next to the hub for the back of the socket to rest on, with a jack under the axle to match the height just right. Helps a lot with keeping that socket on. But since I got an impact gun I've used it every time since and the nut has always popped right off - no problems and very easy to hold the socket/gun in place.

My socket is the same parts store special with the 4 prongs sticking out.

BTW, the spindle nut sits in a happy world of grease. If it ever seizes on there are bigger problems in that hub.

i have an impact gun too but I'm worried that it will break the prongs off... maybe i'll give that a go too.

thanks (all of you) for your suggestions by the way

EDIT: impact gun did the trick! came off easy that way... guess that shows how noobish I am :doah: ...oh well learnded something new. I didn't have the impact gun last time I did this so it never even came to me

I just bought this socket. My D60 socket is bigger then this 2 1/4 one though. The 2 1/4 for the D44 correct??
