Here's a shot of the front & rear. Can you please ID? I tried off the tech article on the front page but couldn't match anything up.

Obviously they need a little work. Everthing seems to operate ok, but I need to at least address the leaks. Ideas?

Look like 10 bolts to me -- this on an 80's 1/2 ton?

Both look like they're leaking around the cover, and the front might also be from the fill plug.

Easy solution is to pull both covers, drain 'em, scrape the surface good, put in new gaskets with a bit of goop, and then refill. (My choice for goop would be the black Permatex that is allegedly impervious to oil, but others may have other preferences.)

Clean out the threads on the front (both the hole in the cover and the fill plug itself) with a wire brush, and off you go.

Were it me, I'd wirebrush the covers and prime & paint them, but normal people might forego that step :D Green one is from the '84 M1009 CUCV, and the blue one is of course from the Smurfmobile.

Thanks guys. Yes they're 10 bolts. Standard GM?

I meant to mention, sorry, that it's an '89 GMC.

I imagine I'll wind up painting them while off. Just depends on what the house repair list is like that weekend.

Very standard: came on all the 1/2-ton's in that era. They're actually called, as on the Axle ID page, "GM Corporate 10 bolt" front- and rear ends as there are other axles with 10 bolts on the cover... but that tends to be reduced to "10 bolts".

Dont forget to check your vent tube for being clear of debris

Ah yes, good point! If it gets clogged, heat will make the air trapped inside expand and push gear oil out anywhere it can go. The little plastic breather on the end of the line is famous for getting gummed up. I seem to recall soaking mine in carb cleaner.
