I'm trying to pull the hub on my 85 6 lug 1/2 ton and have never had a problem getting the hub guts off before. I've got the first snap ring and the big ring out, can't get to the inner snap ring because the outer clutch gear is STUCK!!!! Improvised a 'puller' only to bend it. I haven't needed any leverage before so not sure that I've missed.

Not sure how it is with the half tuns, but on my dana60, theres the outter snap ring, and the inner snap ring on the shaft. After that, screw in the hub cover screws and use them to pull it. Sometimes it can be tight but..

Wait, you are speaking of 3 snap rings, but I am only aware of 2. You have the large outer snap ring that engages the outer hub and prevents the hub guts from pulling out when you screw the outer hub face on, and the small snap ring on the axle stub. Those are the only 2 snap rings that I have seen on 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton GM hubs. Which ring are you having trouble with?

If it is the small snap ring on the axle, try using a prybar or screwdriver to push the axle outwards from the axle u-joint.

Dabba-Thats exactly how I've done it dozens of times before, now it will not budge at all.

Lectric- I think there is another small snap ring in a slot on the spline but cannot get to it without pulling the outer clutch gear which is what is stuck. I could be wrong.

I've seen it where the end of the stub splines get boggered up and you need to file them before you can remove the locking hub. In order to do this though you have to push the locking hub inner "guts" inward which sounds like that is what's stuck on yours.

Yes thats exactly whats stuck. It has 'come to my attention' that my wifes cousin "had to ""tap"" it in with a 4lb maul" ...this is AFTER we've had the thing apart a dozen times in the past and NEVER needed a hammer before. I rarely used 4wd and don't know how I'd have burred up the spline but things do happen so.....long story short I'm going to need a puller or slide hammer that will fit the tiny holes on the clutch gear. All this to find out IF I need new bearings or if the lock ring wasn't adjusted properly during the Hammer Incident RnR last time. SOMEthing is definitely wrong,I got the death shimmy and found the wheel a bit sloppy.

Thats in the plans after I get the burban rolling again :waytogo: This has gone from a mechanical mistake issue to a moron clusterF reversal issue.

UPDATE: Using a homemade puller, half a can of lube and a BFH I got the clutch gear out.
QUESTION: Can I put just the lock rings/washer back in ,skip the clutch guts and get the cap to stay on? I'm not running 4w at all for now anyway and can't spring for a new rotor and hub locks right now. I am not even trying to reuse any of that mess when I do get 4wd back.

The guts hold the outer hub dial on, so without at least that portion in you won't be able to keep the dial on. If you can put only the outer portion with the screw holes in then the big outer snap ring you could do it since you don't use the 4x.

kind of sounds like your wife's cousin just bought you a new set of spindle nuts/washers/snap rings. It's the only way to make it "right" again.
Make sure to give his dumb ass the "doubletap" with the 4lb maul. Just to make sure...he doesn't do it again.

Lectric thats the part that was wedged in tight, not sure how to keep the dial on without it either.
Boondock I agree but I know I won't be seeing any reimbursement....not in the form of cash anyway....I think I'll help Karma along a bit real soon :dunno: Anyone else like those "Mayhem" commercials?
