Well, it was getting a little cold up here and the snow was deep so I had to put on the hard top so I would not freeze. I had a problem because I was planning on a soft top, so I replaced the back tailgate with a pickup tailgate. I had to rig up this plexiglass rear window. Just took some aluminum angle that I found and pop riveted it to the glass after I made it fit in the old window track.

One thing I noticed when I did this before I pulled the rig off the road, was the exhaust fumes were nearly unbearable with the un-sealed talgate.

I've driven it a few hundred miles since I did this and haven't noticed any exhaust fumes. I am planning on getting a seal for the tailgate.

yup, thats what im gonna do with mine, only i think im going to permanently attach it to the removable top. Ive still got the glass, so I can do a perfect match in plexy.

This is a good idea. How much is saved? How long does the plexiglass remain transparent? My tailgate has seen better days so this may be a good option.

I've been running a polycarbonate windshield in mine for nearly two years, its holding up fine. No hazing, just some scratching from wear and tear. Plastic polish will remove any minor scratches with little effort. I'm not even sure its worth messing with for this season, its all pretty minor. The polycarb I used was rated for use in the sun, some isn't.

I don't know the weight of the stock rear glass weighs (30-40 lbs maybe?) but the polycarbonate in my windshield (the same size or a bit smaller) is only 3 lbs. or so, 1/8" thick IIRC.

Very flexible. I think it is 1/8 inch. That is why I used the aluminum angle to stiffen it up. Otherwise it would suck to slide it up in the hardtop window channel.

Got mine from a sign business here in CO.

Make sure you get polycarbonate plastic and not acrylic (much weaker and breaks with VERY sharp edges).

Yeah i agree. if i have my window cracked down about 10" i start getting light headed because of all the fumes. maybe you could run a gasket around it

Hey just bought a 1985 K5 blazer, the rear window wasn't in the track so it was just proped up and I was driving and it slid down and smash half in my truck half on the road, would like to put a pickup tailgate on it so it has the exterior handle to release tailgate and just glue a plexiglass window in my topper think it would work? Anyone done it? Any other ideas?

Good to the search works!

Not sure I would permanently affix the window...what if you had some outsized cargo and needed the windows out of the way?

Fwiw, I've also been thinking of dumping the glass and going plexi...like above make it removable. Plus the weight savings and no need to worry about that damn motor would be nice!

My buddy used lexan from Home Depot. Just cut it to size and screwed into the top to snug it to the frame. I think he used 4 screws per side. The lexan doesn't scratch very easy and was said can use the clear vleaner to take out small scratches. He sold his truck but I think he used a piece if foam inbètween the window and tailgate to close it off.

I did that with my k5.
I made a latch to keep the window up in the grove.
I never got the time to make a seal between it and the tailgate but had a design in mind.
