Plug gap .045 & Timing

84 K5 w/ 305cid with 130k. 570cfm holley carb, headers, dual exhaust thru dynamax and catco cats.

ALso what is optimum timing for power and gas mileage while running 87 pump gas.

Is this the proper plug gap? what are you guys running. my factory manual is down stairs and im too lazy to get it. :laugh:

.035 is generally standard. Larger gaps require a higher voltage coil to fire.
 
carbed motors are usually .035 in my experience.... .045 on newer FI motors with better ignitions...

most stockish sb's like between 28 and 32 total timing...
 
Since you haven't said that you finally stopped being lazy and found the answer to your plug gap I just checked in the manual and plug gap for a 1984 blazer with a 305 is .045" and it says to look at the underhood sticker for the timing.

Guess instead of me being honest, I should just said that I dont have a manual. huh?

No stickers under my hood, soooo, that is why I asked here. Usually can ask questions on CK5 without the hassles.

Right, that 4 degrees is initial timing. The distributor will add a bunch more timing based on the weights/springs in the distributor and also based on the vacuum advance.

Think of it more like the stock distributor is going to throw spark at ~26 degrees before top dead center, you're going to set the initial timing 4 degrees advanced and now it will throw spark 30 degrees before TDC.

All of the spark timing changes under load, RPM etc but don't worry, 4 degrees advanced is fine.
 
Right now, as Im looking at the dampner and timing tab. it goes

(left - passenger side of tab) 10 8 4 0 4 8 10 ( right - drivers side of tab)



right now I set it at 4* to the LEFT of the 0 . Is this correct.

right, what Chris said... i talk in total timing #'s because thats whats really important..... your not gonna blow up a motor at idle with timing off, but you sure will if your total timing isn't all in for the curve, above 3k....

it's a habit from boats, where the motors spend 90% of the time between 3 and 4,000 rpm's...

About your last question, yes to the left of zero is advanced and to the right of zero is retarded.
