Poll: Detroit or Lockright locker?

I wouldn't use a Lockright in a 10b in a fullsize. The unit is small and the carrier is weak. I would hope you at least have a 30-spline carrier and shafts.

Detroit would be better - eliminates the stock weak carrier, plus has the larger bearing journals found on the 8.6". But now you have spent quite a bit more $$$ and moved the weak link elsewhere. Probably better resale value in future after you go to the D60. (Could even be used in a street/hotrod vehicle).

I can see how the Detroit mave have a more abrupt engagement. It has square-cut dog teeth whereas the Lockright's are chamferred slightly. IMO there's a little more 'smarts' in the Detroit on when it engages. The Lockright locks on almost any input power (think Powr-Lok with teeth instead of clutches)

Funny thing is I thrashed a Detroit in the back 10 bolt in my rig running 33's coming out of a gravel pit, but have had no trouble (so far) with the lock Rights. Course I carry a spare open carrier and approproate parts with me now...

Ya, I know Allen. He is one of the exceptions to the rule but eventually it will catch up to him. He is looking for a D60 after he saw Rob & Mikey snap chromo D44 stubs in Parker w/37" tires. Allen does have chromo's which is the reason he is getting away with it sofar. The other reason is because he is lighter then most of us & displays great throttle control. If he steps on the BBC when he is bound up wheeling it is all over for the D44.

Harley

Which is my point - driving style makes all the difference. That's why I roll my eyes whenever folks make a blanket statement about 1/2 tons breaking. Heck, there are guys that can't keep a 60 together on 42's...

Maybe somebody should mention that to Allan's D44. :ignore: 42's driven by a BB on 5+ rated trails, and no breakage. :eek1:
I happen to know he has broken it a few times.. Even on 37s. Mostly hub issues though. And a 5+ trail is considered damn near winch only, and more than usually not accessible with a FS rig. Hoss is right, be nice to your half ton **** and it will treat you well in return. Drop it in reverse, crank the wheel, and hit the gas...........Well Harley..:haha:
